Ok so it's finally race week  my homework is done and I know that I am supposed to behave myself this week but how does one fill a void left by cutting in half the weekly training distances of 150miles biking,  30 running, and 10k swimming? The race is Sunday and here it is on wednesday and I'm already at my mileage limit for the week. I mean I can only go through my gear bag and clean my bike so much.  Gaaa!

Wrap yourself in bubble wrap and don't leave the house to avoid injury!

Last year, I fell down some stairs two weeks before IMCdA.  Fortunately, no damage done but I became paranoid about doing anything that could lead to possible injury.

I'd start reviewing the course and race guidelines/instructions, also my gear and checklist.

Make sure you've got all your race plans solid.  Is your bike ready with adequate flat plan ?

Are your tires and tubes ok ?

Do you have your nutrition worked out for bike and run ? Like how you will carry it.

How about the run, speed laces tested ? socks not chafing ?

what about the sun ? did you check the conditions forecasted ?

What are the water conditions...have you tested your wetsuit adequately ? Goggles ?

This is a fine tuning week...use the training downtime to strategize.

Just some ideas.

I always get nervous about getting injured before my marathon as it has happened 2 out of the 7 times I have attempted to run it, but also because I teach tennis and can easily get hurt playing. I never used to worry about getting injured for tennis tournaments and stuff like that when I played competitively, but I also didn't put months of work in to 1 tournament like you do for one race.

Assuming you've read the Athlete Guide end to end, have a checklist of T1, T2, pre-race, post-race and travel items and todo's prepped.   Your gear and bike are checked and re-checked for last minute issues or adjustments.  You have verified and re-verified travel plans and reservations.  You have withdrawn any cash you plan on taking with you.   You had that pre-race pedicure and light massage.  You've watched Kona 2012 a couple of times, and re-watched the Iron Wars a few times.  Your Ipod contains all the necessary focus music you'll need.   You have a book picked out to pass the time, if there's any time to be passed.  You've cleaned your home, dishes etc., so when you get back you can focus on recovery and life swamping back in.  You've prepped your own food to take in the cooler to the race for race morning, and you have that extra coffee maker packed with Starbucks so you don't have to depend on yucky 2 am hotel room coffee.

And if so, then relax and watch the calories - this is the easiest time to get "fat", although only you would notice and no one else would care even if they did notice.

You need to figure out what you are going to do at the finish line.  I am a big fan of finger guns, double barrel style (but make sure you have a permit =)

Thank you all for your great suggestions and humor.

Once upon a time in another life and another century I was right here in the same situation. I had a great race and a really good result then. 29 years later I am finally back! Race prep was a very very enjoyable journey.  I know how to prepare and how to taper but its soo hard after this many months of training routine. It really all comes down to controlling that excess energy that builds up ll week long and then unleasching it in just the right way at just the right time. At any rate I'll be the guy with the biggest grin on the starting line in Clermont this sunday and I plan to give it everything I got. In other words. Somebody is goin down!
