Elite 4547 | Subject: "Critically Acclaimed" Movies you didn't love... I know this is a tough thread. For every movie listed here, likely 90% of everyone else will be up in arms saying, "Seriously? That's an awesome movie!" I've got one on my mind. Dark Knight. Was I supposed to feel for any of these characters? Okay, I cared for Gordon's kids, but aside from them, who was I supposed to care about? Christian Bale? And what was with the whispering? was he doing a Clint Eastwood impression? and Maggie Gylenhaal. Am I supposed to feel for her as she's in between kissing two different guys? Note to two other guys, you could probably do better. And what was with Dent's rapid fall into craziness? and Ledger's Joker, okay, I get it. The Joker's psychotic. Excellent. But he was so loopy, how am I supposed to believe he can get anything done? At times he doesn't care about anything and appears suicidal, the next he's pre-planning every small detail. Riiight. Perhaps I was just not in a good mood prior to watching that movie. 1.16 million ratings at rotten tomatoes...avg. rating 4.5 stars out of 5. Honestly, if it hit 3 out of 5 stars from me, that would be me being very charitable. So what ya'll got?

ETA: Gladiator wasn't up against a strong field. Traffic and Erin Brockovich were the other contenders and neither was outstanding. OTOH, Dances With Wolves beat out Goodfellas, which, in retrospect, is one of the greatest Oscar travesties ever. Edited by jmk-brooklyn 2013-04-21 6:05 PM |

Absolutely agree. Come to think of it, anything Leo has been in has been disappointing to me. I haven't seen Django yet, so maybe there's hope. |

(I remember seeing that 3 times in the theater...loved it...but then again, I'm a huge softy...cried every time) That said, you aren't too alone, rotten tomatoes had over 35 million ratings for it averaging at 3.3 out of 5 stars. 69% of the audience "liked it." |

Love it.Even though I regularly use lines from it in my repetoir, I'm not a particular fan of The Blues Brothers. I probably shouldn't admit that, but it's true. I have three kids though, so the opportunity to say, "Orange whip, orange whip, orange whip? 3 Orange whips," presents itself way too often.jmk-brooklyn - 2013-04-21 6:02 PMI enjoyed Gladiator as an epic, but no way did I think it deserved Best Picture. OTOH, Dances With Wolves beat out Goodfellas, which, in retrospect, is one of the greatest Oscar travesties ever. Wasn't Gladiator chock full of CGI effects? Honestly, I think the CGI can get overdone with a lot of flicks. Just the slightest mistakes are very noticeable...like when a CGI created creature is falling, it's very apparent gravity isn't affecting the creature like it should be, or the sizing isn't consistent one scene to the next. That's something I thought Titanic did very well with. The CGI from what I remember was done in scenes from far away views. Gladiator had 3.8/5 stars, 85% of audience liking it with over 32 million reviews. I thought it was a good action movie. and JMK, just looked, yeah that was a weak Oscars field that year, 2001. Now JMK, I'll agree with you that Dances with Wolves didn't deserve the Best Picture...but I'm not into gangster movies (Goodfellas), Ghost makes me cry every time. |

(Top Gun? "who could hate that?" (I raise my hand slowly avoiding eye contact) Sorry, I just didn't like the movie. Sorry. But to dodgersmom, all Cruise movies? Honestly, not too many of them are "critically acclaimed," but he has been in some very enjoyable movies. Few Good Men, Jerry maguire, Rain Man, Last Samurai, and one of my personal favs., Minority Report. |

Subject: RE: "Critically Acclaimed" Movies you didn't love... Forest Gump. I just don't like it. The first time I watched it I thought it was entertaining but now I know what is going to happen I just don't enjoy the movie. Hubby will turn it on and I find something else to do. Same with that movie about the Hillbilly singers. I don't remember the name of it, George Clooney was in it. I have never ever been able to stay awake for Dances With Wolves. Fall asleep every time. Was Message In a Bottle critically acclaimed? I was P.O.'d with the ending to that movie and wished I could get those hours of my life back. Agree about Titanic - never got into that one either. |
