Pre-race routine:

Tried to sleep but not happening. Had neighbors at hotel that got in a drunken argument at two in the morning (she did most of the arguing). Shut it down by knocking on the door (they never answered), but it started again. That was following by the headboard at 3:45am - yup, the make up sex. So sleep was minimal. Finally stumbled out of room after downing muffin and gatorade and drove to transition. Parking was easy, transition easily set up and walked over to swim start. Port o poties werent too crowded.
Event warmup:

Jumping jacks in wetsuit. It felt breezy and cool prior to sunup. Even in my wetsuit, it seemed I couldn't get warm.
Swim
  • 41m 30s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 58s / 100 yards
Comments:

41 Min? Way slow for me. Jumped in off the dock in time trial fashion. Water was not shocking at all. I felt my navigation was good throughout. I could not get into a good breathing rhythm until at least half way. Although in the marina, I kept having waves/chop splash over my head. Took at least three mouthfuls of water.
What would you do differently?:

More wetsuit practice I guess. Felt like I had done the pool distance equivalent several times without trouble, albeit much faster.
Transition 1
  • 03m 50s
Comments:

Wetsuit strippers at exit of swim, ran to bike. Minimal gear exchange (tried to keep it simple this race). Decided to run in shoes instead of running start. Went well overall. Felt like I wasted no time.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 2h 48m
  • 56 miles
  • 20.00 mile/hr
Comments:

First race on the new Speed Concept. Had finished dialing in the fit last week. Fit was perfect. Went with torpedo bottle on bars and aero bottle on downtube. Drank two bottles of scratch and two waters. Ate two gels and one gu chomps. First time during a race that I felt like hydration was spot on. I did get hungry on second half of bike but didn't have any food on me.
First part of bike along the water was ok, then the turn up the causeway and left all the way to mile 28 was in stiff headwind. Didn't overdo it here, but thought I was moving slowly even though passing many folks. Coming back in was fun as my average here was around 25.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Probably eat a couple stinger waffles along the way.
Transition 2
  • 02m 8s
Comments:

No nonsense here. Socks / shoes on and out the door.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 2h 26m 28s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 11m 11s  min/mile
Comments:

It felt a LOT hotter than 70's. Parts of the run that weren't in the shade did not feel fun. Was trying to run from aid table to aid table. Was looking forward to the coke but it was only at every other station. I also enjoy oranges but there were none.
Felt like I ran out of gas at about mile 7. Did a lot more walking from here in.
What would you do differently?:

More bike / run brick training.
Post race
Warm down:

Hung out in Armstrong park for a bit. Got some pizza. Then hopped on the shuttle back to transition so we could get on the road.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Work of course. Wish I had gotten in some more training.

Event comments:

Overall a positive race for me. Felt like the bike went well even if other segments did not. Time trial swim was very nice. Not much traffic to contend with. Bike course was flat but wind added a level of difficulty. Run course was pretty flat and uneventful. No finisher swag at this race - no visor or finisher shirt. Not that I need another visor. The weather this year was definately more pleasant.

Good job and nice race, those winds on the way out of the bike were pretty decent.
