Sunny
Total Time = 2h 40m 51s
Overall Rank = 172/354
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 19/35
Pre-race routine:

Slept in until 4:45 AM!
Event warmup:

Stretching, jogging.
Swim
  • 29m 4s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 46s / 100 yards
Comments:

My goals for the swim were to: (1) stay relaxed, (2) focus on form, and (3) keep the buoys in sight as much as possible. That last goal was challenging for the first 200 yards because we headed directly into the sun and the buoys were bright yellow. But I managed to follow the bubbles through the glare and rounded the first buoy without a problem. The rest of the swim was smooth sailing. This was the best swim I've ever had -- I beat my 1.5K swim PR by 5 minutes. I'm usually straining by the end of the swim, but I felt pretty good coming out of the water. No complaints.
What would you do differently?:

My sighting improved dramatically, but I still could have cut a tighter path between the buoys.
Transition 1
  • 01m 36s
What would you do differently?:

Need to work on running/jumping bike mount. I haven't bothered with it for quite a while because I'm usually exhausted after the swim.
Bike
  • 1h 16m 19s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 19.54 mile/hr
Comments:

This is a new bike course for the Silicon Valley Olympic Triathlon. It follows most of the Morgan Hill Sprint Triathlon bike course, and then heads south to Christopher High School in Gilroy, then back to Uvas Reservoir. Most of my 40K bike rides for Olympic distance tri's are in the 1:15 - 1:16 range. This time I tried to back off a bit and save something for the run.
What would you do differently?:

Easing up on the bike didn't do much for me on the run. So maybe it would have been better to push the bike a bit more.
Transition 2
  • 01m 33s
Run
  • 52m 19s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 25s  min/mile
Comments:

I've been trying to make friends with the hills, but they still hate me. I started out on the run feeling pretty good, and held an 8-minute-per-mile pace for the first 2 miles. Unfortunately, the hills became an issue right as I passed the 2-mile marker. I had done quite a bit of hill training, but my legs still tied up on the first hill and never loosened up again. This is a familiar theme for me. I struggled through the hills on miles 3-4, and managed to picked up the pace slightly on miles 5-6.
What would you do differently?:

I need to lose some weight (<175), do more hill repeats and strength work, and include hills and increase the intensity of my brick workouts.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, stretched.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My lack of ability to run the hills.

Event comments:

USA Productions made the right decision in moving this race entirely to Uvas Reservoir. It was formerly based at Almaden Lake (AKA, Duck Poop Lake) in San Jose. The water quality and swim experience at Uvas is far superior to Almaden Lake. Please keep this race at Uvas in the future!
