I'm doing the White Lake OLY next weekend and wondering if anyone had any ideas on water temp or where I could find it?  Imagine it's still a bit chilly!

Currently 71.  That's a whole lot warmer than the 54 for the White Lake Half!!!!

I think we might have some rain come thru? Never been to white lake yet, but they said its shallow and thus the temperature is prone to fluctuations. I'd say 71 now is a good sign, just watch the weather this week, it might be cooler on race day? I'm pumped. First race for me this year.

herkimer81 - 2013-04-26 9:57 PM Never been to white lake yet,

You are in for a real treat.....awesome place to race but you'll feel like you just stepped out of a time machine into the 1950s!

Time machine is a good description. It feels like you've been dumped into the 1950's. I'm using this as a tune up for Raleigh 70.3. I'm fearing the water temp has dipped back in to the mid-60s.

all tuning up for Raleigh. Bring it.

your remark about water temps just makes one less decision for me. I thought that if it was about 75deg I would go without a suit so it would be more like Raleigh which I believe will not be wetsuit legal.

If it i sstill low 70's or even 69  I will be putting the old suit on. Guess we will know more at about 5pm today.

sorta blows.

I just checked the bib #'s and I am in the open wave even though I changed it to AG over a week ago. Oh well I guess I will be last out of the water in my wave just like at the freeze fest that was WL HIM

Thanks for asking the question - and for the other person to post the weblink to the water temp site.  I checked the weather and the night time lows are in the 50's so might be a little cool but at this time of the year, 65-68 degrees in the lake is still doable!  I have raced this weekend doing the sprint for the last 4 years and this year decided to try the double on Sunday.  Was going to do the OLY but did not get in my swimming.  Going to do White Lake OLY in September - this will be my 5th year for that one.  I love White Lake - is a step back in time; but very stress free!  :-)

Had a blast out there today. White Lake was like taking a trip in my hot tub time machine. Swim was fun. My back tire blew in the first two minutes on the bike and cost me 10 minutes. So if you saw some poor bastard on the side of the road, it was me. I thought the bike was a 40k and was surprised by that "extra" 5k. Aside from the flat had a great time and felt good to mix it up again in 2013.

If things don't change, Set Up is going to have to change the description of White Lake on their website.  I have not seen the lake "like glass" in a couple of years.........

Yup, they should write: This is a triathlon. There is a lake, and some roads to ride your bike on and to run on. It may be 90+ degrees or under 40, but the odds of pleasant weather are minimal. You may be able to surf on the lake or not, but you SHOULD be able to find a beer can or two on the bottom if you swim with your eyes open. The swim may be wetsuit legal, but it may not, but you will likely only know the morning of the race. And maybe not even then. And there is probably going to be a headwind. Both ways.

Dont forget...fog ...there may be fog where you cant see past your hand the morning of and swimming into a white abyss is not going to happen. get ready for an all out duo should this condition occur.

I saw photo's of the WL weekend's swim and it got me thinking. If the wind was blowing like that at Kure, then you would of been in trouble. The swim would of been cancelled and many people left disappointed.

Weather is something we all deal with in training or racing, and while having the ideal glassy day with no wind for the swim and bike makes for a really enjoyable day, the inverse of those conditions make for finishing those races even more rewarding in my opinion.

WL throws it all at us, and I have raced it in the likes of the weekend to no wind and so damn hot the roads were melting. And all in the same time frame, the 1st weekend in May. Thats the beauty of WL. Variety.

Hats of to Set Up for not cancelling the swims on both weekends due to the conditions, and I bow to those mighty warriors who suited up and met the challenge head on.

The swim(s) last year at Kure Beach were no walk in the park.  In an ocean swim, you expect waves.  In a lake (and especially White Lake) not so much.

ETA:  After 2013 WL Half, Spring International & Double Sprint as well as 2012 White Lake Sprint, I'm going to go with "like glass" as the exception.

White lake was choppy but no where near being something that should have been cancelled. I hated every second of the swim at both WL HIM and thi spast Saturday, but in no way think that cancelling should have even entered any discussion.

I actaully think more Kudo's should be given anybody doing the sprint. After riding the last 4mi on Saturday I thought there i sno way I am doing the sprint and having to ride that backside of White Lake twice. OMG that road is worse than a goat path and I would not care to do a 14mi bike with 6 or so miles being over that thing.

Kure would have been interesting if held on Sat. Here i sa pic from Wrightsville on Sat and Kure/ Carolina i sgenerally pretty much the same .

Eppie, I think the issue is that it is touted as a smooth, glasslike swim, but in reality it is almost never like that. Just an issue around marketing, not around panicked triathletes.
