Pre-race routine:

I packed my gear the night before, running through my mental check list. i didn't get to bed until late , say 12:00pm. I think being the last race of the season and the fact that I've been training for a while and a few injuries along the way my head wasn't really in the game.

Woke up at 5:00 , had some breakfast, musilie. Was going to have a carbo bar but forgot to.

Put the gear in the car, nearly forgot the drink bottle and helmet. More signed that I wasn't really thinking about what I was doing.

Drove down at around 5;45 , it's only a 10 mintue drive so I had plenty of time.

Registered , set up my transition. This time taking care to remember where my bike was.

It was still really early so I waited around until I put my wet suit on.

6:30 put the wet suit on for the 7:00 pm start. Had a few text from Nicola , she’s my new girl friend and absolutely gorgeous.

Noticed putting the suit on , I had forgot to take the track pant off . OMG I've never done this.

Finally got organised and made my way to the start line to have a quick warm up swim.

Saw Nichola, a quick chat , cuddle kiss and some words of encouragement for a 500 meter warm up swim.

Event warmup:

Quick swim , tried out a new technic for the recovery. Seemed to work well.

Comments:

I was standing on the beach when the hooter went off for the start. This seemed to surprise most of field.

Start was good, kept up with the mid field for a while and seemed to be swimming well.

The only thing that I remember was my kick dropped off, for some reason, and technique got a bit sloppy at times , but all and all it was not a bad swim.

Even had someone drafting off me, that’s a first.

What would you do differently?:

Not much, more swim training in the off season.

Comments:

Mmm...couldn't find my bike, had the right row but didn't go far enought down.

Wasted alot of time.
What would you do differently?:

More attention to where my bike is.

Comments:

This race is really a drafting race and everyone does it. There are lots of bikes on the 10 km lap , as the sprint , Olympic and duathlon fields are all on the course.

Had a couple of problems on the ride, first hairpin got out of the saddle , felt my calf go.

Had to run higher gear, higher cadence. The other issue was there were no bikes near me so the first 20km I was time trialling.

The last 20 km I managed to hook up with a small group 6 , but once I had my turn on the front 3 got dropped. With only three of us it was hard work with two of us doing most of the work.

Calf got worse during the ride.

Comments:

Really good transition
Run
  • 1h 02m 37s
  • 10 kms
  • 06m 16s  min/km
Comments:

Struggled , right calf hurt a lot , so I was changing my run technique to compensate. First 5 km went ok, but near the end left knee start to really hurt.

The second 5 km really hurt a lot, struggled a lot and basically couldn't run.

Ended up being passed by a lot of people and finished up with my worst 10 km time , including training. Really happy that I finished the race though.

Post race
Warm down:

Had some water and muffins. Went home and ice knee on and off for about 3 hours. Seemed to help alot.
