Hey guys, new triathlete here. Got into the sport last year and am hooked. Im a pretty solid runner but still learning how to ride fast. Ive been riding an older Specialized Allez road bike i bought off a friend. Im thinking about getting a slightly used Slice or B16 but am trying to do everything on a budget, i.e. without paying $200 to get fitted. Is this a terrible idea? I'm right at 5'8 145 pounds. My pants are all size 30 length but are always slighty too long so I have to take them to the tailor to shorten a tad. With that very limited information any idea whether a Slice or B16 might fit me better? Appreciate the help.

Can't give you advice on fit except the 200for a retul fit was worth every penny, that said I am a fan of felt and would Steer you in that direction

Hard to go wrong with Felt.  And spend the money for a correct fit!

I have a 2011 B16 and like it quite a bit. We are about the same size and I got a 52cm...I also got the retul fit...

they're both fine steeds.  the felt has got a shorter stack and longer reach in comparison to the slice.  My guess- if you're 5'8" and size 30 pants are long on you- you've got short legs and a long torso.

The Felt Mafia welcomes you as a member of their club.

but- even after you get the bike- the fitting will be worth the time.  As this is your first tt bike, I'd suggest making sure that they set you up, let you ride 1000 miles on it, and come back for a re-adjustment once you get used to the position.

Hey, I have a Slice 5 and think it is a great bike.  I was able to pick it up as a leftover for $1600.  I still think there are many great deals out there.  I've only done one duathlon but posted the 4th best bike split with it. I find it comfortable, smooth and fast.  I love killing Strava segments with it.LOL  I am 5 10 with 32 pants and ride a 54.  I did not get a fitting performed.  I went to several shops and had them set me up and took test rides.  I thought I wanted the speed concept but after all was said and done I felt best on the Slice and it was also the least $$.  If you ride with aerobars now it will be a pretty easy transition onto a tri bike and testing them will be a little easier to compare.  If you have never ridden with aerobars you might have a harder time really comparing as you will be focused on a totally foreign feeling in my opinion.  Good luck.  I'm sure you can't go wrong either way as long as you feel good on the bike.

Well I got a fit before buying my tri bike.  The shop carried both brands.  My measurements are similar to yours and I ended up with the Felt B16.  The geometry of those two bikes are very different and the Felt is a better fit for longer torsos while the Slice is just the opposite. I would recommend getting the fit or you may not get the value you are seeking.

Thank you guys for all the feedback. Sounds like I might be a better fit for the Felt but probably worth the money to get fitted.

I went for the felt b16 for 2 reasons. 1) most importantly it fit me the best even though the slice was an acceptable fit. 2) felt is all carbon and better components, and the slice was not. Price was about the same I think.

What year Cannondale Slice were you looking at?  The 2008 Slice and newer are full carbon.
