Subject: Like cycling solo?

My husband really likes organized group rides. He likes being in a paceline and the whole social, "group" effort. I really have no interest.  (I have tried paceline a couple of times with my husband and his friend) He's been bugging me to do one for a while, and it makes me feel like something is wrong with me that I'd prefer going out alone.

I'll prolly try it, just so I can't be accused of being a total negative Nancy.

But it really wouldn't bother me if I never did a group ride.

I prefer solo rides as well, although you do not stand out as much as a group so they are not quite as safe. I prefer being able to go my own pace and sometimes like to mix in intervals. I also like to go solo because I have young kids so a lot of time I need to be able to jump on, jam, and then be back home without spending time driving to meet up and the other inherent delays ect ect.

I feel the same way. I don't like training with a group either. I cherish the alone time, but I will train with the group if I feel like riding or running with them will make me a better cyclist or runner.

I feel the same way. I've been involved in a few group pace lines at charity events and just really didn't enjoy it. Probably because the roadies felt the need to bark out instructions left and right and it made me feel stupid.

I can't race in a paceline anyway, so even when I go out with a group I prefer to just ride in a loose pack and wait for each other at turns/intersections. That's more of my kind of "group" ride.

x2

I like riding alone a lot of the time and doing my workouts as I've laid them out (tough with someone else along), but for zone 2 rides the company is nice (especially my wife's).

I agree that group ride (though perhaps less safe, admittedly) definitely make me a better rider.  More confident in control, better at ballistic efforts and recovering while still hammering, etc.  I think they're definitely good to mix in to my training, as I ride better because of them.

Overall, though, I do a lot more riding on my own.

I do most of my bike training solo due to scheduling mostly and location. Group rides are good, though, to help with understanding a few things that you wouldn't know if you did only solo rides.

I'm another one who always goes solo, as others have said, I like to make a last minute decision when to go out on the bike due to family commitments etc.

I prefer group rides, although for shorter rides I don't much care one way or another.  But I was a roadie way before I started doing tri's.  Even mountain biking I tend to do with groups

I tried a group ride once. On their website they claimed to be a friendly group whose goal wa to welcome newbies (like me) into the sport.....they also claimed to ride at an easy pace of 25km/hr. I decided to giving a go after riding solo for 9 months. Well! Not only were they not very friendly, they hammered from the get go and were averaging 33-35km/hr........when I obviously could not keep up they said not to worry "everyone sucks on their first ride"!!I will stay clear of group rides, having people around and behind me freaks me out!!

Yeah I like riding solo most of the time as well. A lot easier logistically, although I could have done with a group towards the end of my long ride today. Motivation died pretty badly.

I have only ever done my rides solo. I just find it easier, no planning I can just head out when I want, stop when I want, go where i want. I may start doing a few group rides this summer just so I can get used to riding with a group if I decide to do cycling races.

I can't imagine why anyone would feel like that is an OK thing to say to someone.  I'm sorry that was your first group ride experience.  I don't blame you for not wanting to do that again :/

What you found was a very bad group.  Don't give up on group rides, but give up on that group

I like variety so some days group rides are nice and other days I prefer to just go get lost on a ride solo.  With that said, of the group rides I do I definitely prefer the roadie group ride to the others.  I hate to say it but a lot of times the stigma attached to triathletes and group rides is true.

I used to train and race in groups. i used to be a road racer. I train and race solo now that I am learning to be a triathlete. I still like group rides as I hammer past them. :-)OP--time is short. Spend it doing what makes YOU happy.

I don't really like to train solo for anything over 60-90 minutes. But don't like big group rides either. The good thing is the group rides in our town (in Oregon) usually separate out and there's not a big mob riding my pace (I'm slow by cyclist standards). The hardcore are out of sight as soon as we hit open road, and the newbies are behind me. So our "pace line" is a small group of 3-6 women, older men, and/or people on crappy bikes who do a nice ride together and take turns sharing the lead. The people who ride my pace (maybe 17-18 mph for a longer ride) don't tend to have big egos, or bark. What I really prefer, though, is to ride with 1-2 other people who aren't super competitive but just want a good workout; socializing optional. Unfortunately (sob) my bike buddy here moved last year, and I haven't found a new one.

I greatly prefer group rides - if you find the right group that's right at your level or a bit above your level, it's great fun to hammer with a pack.

Unfortunately though, I've found it's not as good to rely on this team type training in most cases. In most cases when you train with the group, you end up doing the group's workout, not the optimal workout for yourself.

I've been training all solo since Jan pretty seriously on the bike, and when I rejoined my triclub's long weekend ride today for the first time since last year, it was very apparent that all that solo hammering at my own ability was very good for me - guys who I used to pace equally with were now so slow in comparison that I had to softpedal to stay with them. No way I would have improved this much had I just kept training with the group.

Unless you do a group ride with faster people, you don't really get that much of a workout. There's constant freewheeling and frequent stops to regroup. I like to hammer away, and not worry about others. Plus, there aren't many riders in my area that can hang with me when I ride.

I go it alone.  Only because I'm so new to riding and kinda scared to be in the group with my poor handling skills.  I could see myself wiping out half the group....wouldn't be a pretty picture .  As I improve I would like to try it out.

I like riding in groups.  Seems to push me a bit harder.  Problem is others aren't always available to ride for 90 minutes starting at my house in between meetings on a moments notice. I'm going to try to get back to once a week in a group.

I like riding solo. And I also like riding in groups. They each have their place in training, and require a different dynamic and mindset.

It's easy to spot the people who almost always train solo and expect the same thing in a group ride as they would get solo. And it's easy to spot the people who don't ride in groups because they don't like it.

As smooth as you think you are, riding in a good group will open your eyes to a whole new level.

If you're the fastest one in the group, pull more. If you're not, figure out how to REALLY draft and hang on. Both will push you.
