Subject: TriRock - $120 for a Sprint?

Yesterday I received an e-mail from the Competitor Group telling me that there is still room for me to race the Aurora TriRock race.  I was surprised to see that it was $120 for a race that is pretty much the same as the Rattlesnake Sprint which is $79.

I know that RNR Races are overpriced but $120 for a sprint?

yea, races just go up every year and I find I do fewer races.  No way will I pay $120 for a sprint!  Take advantage of Darrin's offer for free race entry for volunteering!

If you think that's bad, check out the Denver Triathlon:

Sprint $134

Oly $169

$120 for a sprint is absolutely outrageous.  I paid $150 for Nationals this year and that is about tops I would pay for an Oly race, let alone a sprint.  I heard a rumor (friend of a friend of a friend type news) that Tri-Glenwood was going to double its entry fee this year; ~$120 for a sprint AND it's in a pool.  Granted, the Hot Springs is long enough (and the course is designed such) that the swim is kinda sorta like an open water swim, but it's a pool nonetheless.  I keep waiting for the entry fee bubble to burst and it just never happens...

I really hope I don't open a can of worms here but this is an interesting discussion to me as price is something that is fretted over and over for the Denver Triathlon. We started our prices as $119 for the Olympic and $99 for the sprint. We then highly publicized a 40% discount code this year so folks could have paid less than 60 for the Sprint and less than 70 for the Olympic. To me this was a great deal. Yes our prices are very high now but we have to pay more DPD, close more intersections and in general have extremely high costs for our race. This is just what it takes to make an urban race happen especially since we are shutting down Speer Blvd  this year to have the cycling portion happen in an iconic place. DPD is completely closing the off ramps from I-25 and re-routing traffic to make this a safe car free route. Athlete fees should be relevant to the underwriting of the event in my opinion. Let me know if you think differently.

I agree that our entry fees should contribute to offset costs, but your costs do not figure into whether I'm going to pay your race fee.  What matters is whether the experience you are offering is more valuable to me than what you are asking me to pay for it. You are the only one staging an urban triathlon in the area, so a large part of your value proposition is the urban experience.  People can decide what that's worth to them.  Personally, I think it's worth the race fee.

In contrast, Competitor is offering me no such value with a sprint race at Aurora.  Competitor brings nothing new to that experience, and yet they want to charge far more than Racing Underground and Rattlesnake. Quite frankly, local race directors in CO seem to know exactly what types of experiences CO athletes want and value, and I think we pay extremely reasonable fees for it.

Finally, all things equal (and we've established they're not, Tri-Rock fees are $50 higher than Crescent Moon and My Way or the Tri Way), I value supporting local race directors over supporting private equity fund managers.

(I do like WTC races, though.  Those are some great experiences.)

emn915 - My point exactly.  The Denver Tri is a different race because of the Downtown Setting and they can charge more.  TriRock is mostly the same race as the Rattlesnake Sprint and Crescent Moon yet it is $50 more.

I just did the run leg of a relay this weekend and found a trirock postcard on my car. I checked out the website when I got home and saw the price. It is double the price i paid to enter the crescent moon triathlon, and the course is almost identical. I'm doing the wtc series in boulder this year then i'll be sticking with local events. Better value and more personality imo.
