Any of you do Vineman before?  If so, can you compare Chalk Hill to any specific Orange County hills?

Chalk hill is more of a mind game. A lot of curve so you don;t know where the top is.  When I visit my brother I ride "the canyons"...I think a lot of OC cyclist know this area?  I think it ends up in Irvine?  Sorry I can't be more specific, but I always go with another BTer when I'm there.  If you can do the canyons, you can do Chalk hill.  Chalk Hill is not tough, just have to get over the mental thing....

I think a good training hill that would compare would be Ridge Park Road. It is located off of Newport Coast just south of San Joaquin Hills Rd.
My only warning about Vineman is be wary of the unkept roads. They were filled with lumps, bumps and potholes. ALOT of people lost their water bottles. Either the bottles rattled out of the cages or people dropped them while trying to grab a drink.

yup.  Roads aren't great, but hills aren't bad.  Heat is a bigger concern.

It's the hills on the run that are worse. Rolling, and short/steep. I would recommend training for that, too.

Find out how long CH is at Vineman and find a hill that is just as long and do hill training in seated and standing and just hammer in the saddle. Portola Road / Sand Canyon has a hill that is about 1 mile in distance.

How did you feel about Chalk Hill? I was expecting much worse, which maybe was good thing. So thanks to others that made comments about it being maybe more mental.

Agreed, it wasn't a bad hill at all for me. The mental part was that you are on chalk hill for about 5-7 miles and there are all of these little hills that go around corners, so you never quite know which one is the real chalk hill and which ones will stop elevating after you turn the corner. But overall, really not close to as bad as I thought it would be.

For Vineman Chalk hill is not bad like 6% grade or whatever. However the many many small hills will wear you down and the wind will hit you on the 2nd lap. The run hills will probably affect you more than chalk hill. Although after doing IMLT this year, Vineman seems like a flat bike course.
