Any advice for running a race in the rain? Should I wear anything extra like a hat or non absorbent socks or something? What are your experiences with running in the rain?

Ran Calif. Intl. Marathon in the pouring rain.  Wore a cheap rain poncho the entire time.  Didn't keep me dry, but kept the wind out.  And a shower cap over my hat kept the rain running off the bill and mostly out of my eyes.  Also, lots of glide on my feet before the race helped keep the blisters away.  Good luck!

I ran the North Face Ultra Endurance 50 miler in torrential downpour, flooded trail and some good wind. The only thing I added was a thin wind jacket, same one I use for biking. It didnt keep me dry but it kept me warm.

What are the temps suppose to be?  Wind?  Those two things would be my deciding factors as to what to wear.

If coldish, 50's?

Wear lots of Vaseline. It will keep you "dry" and warm.  Feet, legs under shorts or tights, chest, arms pretty much everywhere… Works for me. I also use cloth medical tape for those two sensitive spots you know, ok nipples there I said it, it will not come off like other types of coverage. Put nipple protection on first then Vaseline...

I use the small round bandages then cover those with about 2 ½ inches of tape.

Just remember if you keep the water out you keep the sweat in and your temperature regulation will be affected.

Yes, hard to answer without knowing temps.

Not a tip on what to wear but while you are running do not avoid the puddles. Your feet will be soaked by the end of the race anyways and it'll make it harder on you trying to dodge them.

Nipple protection, hat and clear glasses if they don't fog up.  I can't stand water in my eyes.

Lots and lots of body glide on the feet to prevent blisters. Whatever you wear you are going to end up soaked but you might wish to wear a garbage bag whilst waiting for the start and even for the first mile.

Have your cheering section bring you a fleece or sweatshirt and pants to the finish line.  Even if you can't fully change, having something warm and cozy to slip on over your race clothes will make you feel amazing.

How cold is it?  If it's a warm rain (mid to upper 70's) then I'll wear a cap and a non-cotton t-shirt and non-cotton socks.  Colder weather I'll wear a light-weight water-repellant running jacket and maybe some water-resistant mittens (my hands get cold easily).

Suppose to be 50's and 10mph wind. I am thinking a cheap rain poncho until it gets uncomfortable and a lot of body glide on feet, nipples, and thighs. Maybe a visor to keep the rain out of my eyes.

That's a good plan.  The poncho will help deflect some of that rain.  However, you will sweat even more with it on.  Be sure to hydrate!

I love running in a Southern summer shower minus the electricty.

Just finished the half marathon in Toledo ohio Sunday and It rained the whole time! I didnt mind it as much as I thought I would. Temp in the 50's. Wore shorts and tech tee shirt(nipple band aids) The only issue I had other than being soaked was I was freezing after the run, couldnt stop shaking. Probably because my body temp dropped so fast. Good luck!

Wool socks and I always wear a visor when it's raining/snowing at any temp so the precipitation mostly stays out of my eyes.

Also, make sure to pack a bag of warm/dry clothes for after!

It seemed like every race I did last year was in the run, mostly tris and dus, so I would happy to "just" run in the rain.

Have to say the post title sounds like a good title for a blues piece!  Depends on temperature of rain. If warm, then any tight fitting, quick-drying top, shorts and socks will do. Sometimes if I do an outdoor run in fairly heavy rain here I just wear a tri top and shorts, as they're meant to be comfortable when wet. If cold rain, then wool or tech fibers that stay warm when wet are good.

You have to find a balance between being warm enough not to shiver and cramp, and not overheating--on one hand, it/you might get warmer during the race and you want to have a way to shed a layer if needed--maybe a top that you can slip off and tie around your waist, or smartwool arm warmers that you can tuck into shorts? I'd avoid tights unless you're sure it will be icy rain for the whole time, as they're impossible to get off while running. On the other hand, you don't want to assume you'll warm up from the effort of running, esp. if you're cold-blooded like me. I actually once ran a marathon (in about 3:20) where I was miserably cold the entire time! It was 60-ish at the start and I was in singlet and shorts, thinking, "The weather will warm up, and so will I." Instead, the temps dropped to high 40's, it drizzled from mile 5 onward, and I spent the whole race hoping one of my friends would show up to watch with a jacket I could borrow. (They didn't, and I couldn't!)

I did the Austria ironman marathon in the rain - lots of vaseline stopped any chaffing and a normal running cap kept the rain out of my face.

My first HM was the Lewis and Clark 2008 aka: I ran with Ike (see profile photo

5' of rain and 50 mph winds, 80f at the start, 50f by finish.

You will want a cap with a nice visor, clear or amber lens sun glasses, a trash bag works great as rain gear, and if you have a pair of running shoes that will go the distance but are at the end of their life, wear them. (Your shoes my be waterlogged and useless after the run)

Most importantly, embrace the rain and have fun.

Depends on the rain.  If it's just a drizzle/mist then a hat with a brim that is over your face to keep the rain off your eyes or sunglasses.

If it's coming down pretty good then a light rain/wind jacket if you have one.  A vest is fine and will breath better.

Socks getting wet sucks.  I really lubed up my feet with anti-chafe cream.
