Maybe last week Stu, but that won't last.  This week is a recovery week and as I am REALLY tired, I am going to fully enjoy recovering - meaning I am going to reacquaint myself with the channel up and channel down buttons, going to crack a cold one and become a couch potato for a couple days.

Not too bad for Turkey week, I was down a pound and hit the pool and the track. Gotta get on that bike though.

I forgot about signing up for the Sprint Cohasset Triathlon yesterday. it is the fastest to fill up in the country - 2 hours. Stinks it is about 2 miles from my house but I got on the waiting list.

I just didn't think about signing up for anything this time of year.

Congrats on signing up for the half Steve.

I am thinking of diving into an Oly this year. I would really like to get to that 1 mile swim mark next year.

BTW - Saw a funny sticker on a car the other day, instead of 26.2, etc. it said 0.0 - too funny

You could totally make the Olympic distance. The longer swim is a step up, but with your training you could do it no problem. I motivate myself through the race telling myself that once I'm through the swim the worst part is over and all the fun stuff is coming.

I get done with the swim and think it isn't going to get any better!  I use the bike to fret about the upcoming run.  Guess I have to figure out how to imagine the fun stuff is coming and not be thinking the worst is yet to come!

James, with the improvement you made this past year in the swim, getting to the 1 mile mark and beyond is not going to be a problem!

James, you'll definitely be able to make the .9 mile swim. It is just a matter of training. You can do this!

FWIW, I think the Olympic length is a great distance and has the best balance of the 5 disciplines (taking into consideration transition & nutrition / hydration as well). To me, the swim is short changed a bit in the other distances (though one could argue that since it comes first it has more of a cumulative effect). You also can't "fake" it like with the sprint distance, there is much more of an endurance element to it and requires training for it not to be a "miserable" experience. On the other hand, training for it doesn't consume your life like (proper) training for a HIM or more.

One piece of advice. Do more than one. You'll learn alot from the first one :-)

Can't believe I got into the Cohasset Tri. They sent me an email saying my name came up on the waiting list and I got in. I am totally psyched!

Thanks for all the kind words of encouragement on the Oly. Going to start looking around to see if I can find a good one towards the end of the summer. There is also the Boston Harbor Sharkfest that is a 1 mile swim that I would like to put on my dance-card for 2014 too,

James--Congrats on getting in. Very cool. So you should be totally motivated!

I've found that I can race the Oly distance every four weeks and pretty much stay in top form. On a four week rotation during peak race season allows one week of recovery following a race, two weeks of solid training (work on areas of focus) and one week of taper leading into the race. So, all you have to do is lay out the race plan and you'll be ready to rock.

Thanks everyone for your support. I know my swimming progressed quite a bit last year and I am committed to put in even more time in 2014. I really enjoy the swimming and I am going to like it even more after I get pretty good at it.

Looking at 2 Olies right now that are in my area in September and both are pretty cool. One is called the Lobsterman up in Freeport Maine, they actually feed you lobster after the race. The other is on Marthas Vineyard which it would be cool do it on an island but it can be hard to get to and pricy to stay over unless I camp out which might be fun too. I'll keep you posted.

FYI - A friend of mine is helping out tomorrow with escorting these swimmers in Boston Harbor that do this ice swimming. They swim 1 mile without a wetsuit in 41 degree water or less. This gets you into the International Ice Swimmers Association. Looks like there are a little over 80 thus far.

Been doing good on the diet but I have to start working out more now that I am pretty much over my injury. I have been working till late at night which has put a damper on early morning workouts. Going to try and put in a few hours this weekend.

Yay for getting into the the OLYs!

So, yesterday was a non-stop day with no time for a workout and today we're getting slammed with an ice storm, so I'm calling in my numbers for the week early and will just reset tomorrow. No change on weight (+5) and 210 minutes on training (+7) for a total of 12. Was actually up another mid-week, so glad to pull it back to even.

Just finished the last of the turkey soup for lunch today... yum! Stretched Thanksgiving a little farther than usual this year :-)

Noticed my knees are noisier since I used that bike trainer so much last week.

I am back to running more this week.

Amazing how much better my numbers look on the treadmill since last winter (last time I was on a treadmill). Spose I am making a little progress.

Down another pound at 172.5 - I am determined to get below 160 in a few months. 120 minutes working out, I really have to stop these late nights working and missing AM workouts.

Going to give some kudos for most minutes working out this week to Steve - great job keep it going.

Hey - speaking about losing weight. I have been thinking about buying a new/used set of wheels for my bike (2010 Giant Defy 3). I was looking at the EA 90 SLX and the EA 90 TT. Looking to spend around $500. The Vuelta seem to get decent reviews and are cheap money but not sure if it would be a case of you get what you pay for. Any other suggestions or opinions? I would be using them for training and racing - plus I am not sure if I am ready to go to carbon yet.

For incentive I am not going to use these new wheels till I get under 160 pounds.

Any help would be appreciated.

Sorry I can help much...I don't know about either product. That said, I've had good luck on Ebay buying wheels. I bought Zipp 404's and 808's and scored pretty good deals. I'm sure you could find similar products...just have to be patient. I support my LBS, but not when they want to charge me full retail.

Any info on wheels in general would be good.This will be just be my second year going into this and I don't think I need to get the very best or most expensive wheels but should I spend more money and buy right the first time as opposed to buying twice. If so, should I go carbon and could someone suggest a brand or model that would be good for both training and racing?

Steve - do you use the 404s in less windy conditions? Do you use the zipps for training or only racing? I saw a set of used 2007 606s (I guess they used to sell a 404 front with an 808 rear) for $750 used that look like a good deal, what do you think?

Hey James.

You might look into Flo Wheels - http://www.flocycling.com/index.php. They are carbon wheels and are getting extremely good press.  I have heard NOTHING but excellent reviews.  The aero specs rank among the best wheels on the market.  The one drawback, if it really is one, is that you have to be patient.  They sell out each manufacturing run VERY quickly and it may take a few months to get your wheels.

As to buying right or buying twice.  You mentioned in an earlier post something about $500.  Yes, a set of Flo wheels would cost more than that, however they would be significantly less than Zipps or any of the other major aero wheel manufacturers (for a set of new wheels, don't know how they would compare to eBay).  My opinion, for what it is worth, is to save up and buy right the first time.  I would rather go without for a few months and get the best so I don't have to do it twice.  But that's just me.

Weight was unchanged this week -> 5 points. 

Workout time 361 minutes -> 12 points.

Mrs. Claus has told me that if I am exceptionally good and behave myself until Christmas I may have a "special present" under the tree!  Hmmm, she loves to torture me at this time of year!

I'm hoping to be putting the new wheels I have been talking about under the tree. We will just have to see what the ebay or CL elves can put together for me.
