Total Time = 50m 16s
Overall Rank = /
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 1/2
Pre-race routine:

This was an evening race. Never had an evening tri before. Tried to think through staying off my feet and fluids....Nutrition--but really wasn't totally feeling this one. I knew it was colder out and the water was even colder. Not a good scenario for me.

Got to the site around 3:30 and wandered around. Cheered a lot of the young kids for their races. Awesome to see young kids ages 5-10 doing a super sprint (100 meter swim-5K bike and 0.5 mile run)
Event warmup:

Finally get the all clear to set up transition, get marked, Had my chip. Slid the wetsuit half way up and walked to the lake. Pulled the suit the rest of the way up and got in the lake. Took 3 strokes and got out swearing I would NOT be getting back in. Michael (RD) convinced me to get in and that they would shadow me allowing me as much time as I needed to complete the swim.
Swim
  • 09m 37s
  • 410 yards
  • 02m 20s / 100 yards
Comments:

I got in the lake and started off with a slow but tolerable rhythm. Stopped to catch my breath and re-group then lost whatever rhythm I had. Do whatever you need to get from point A to point B. Backstroked a good bit got around the turn buoy flipped over to free swam a while then the wetsuit felt so tight I couldn't breathe right. More backstroke. Flipped over in time to finish the swim in free and didn't stop swimming until I touched the dock.
What would you do differently?:

I haven't worn my wetsuit since 2009, I really should have gone to the practice swim the day before the race but had too much going on to do it.
Transition 1
  • 03m 7s
Comments:

Long transition run, I was dizzy getting out of the water and stopped to get my flip flops to run in up to transition.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, I know I need to wear something on my feet to run.
Bike
  • 20m 40s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 18.03 mile/hr
Comments:

I was happy to NOT be the last bike in transition when I hit it....maybe half a dozen other bikes there. Had a rough idea of the course but really wasn't 100% certain. It was extremely well marked with cones and hay bales for the turns. Volunteers and law enforcement in the appropriate places

As soon as I got out on the bike I felt pretty good, was lapped by the lead riders since it was a 2 loop course but they were right behind me when I got out on the road. Honestly only passed one other person, but was never passed by anyone. This is one FAST & FLAT course--just a lot of crazy turns and a rough one over the entry way to a lot then a speed bump--but it is what it is.
What would you do differently?:

NADA, a most excellent ride on my road bike (race bike has a cracked frame and I am waiting for a new Triad SL frame)
Transition 2
  • 01m 46s
Comments:

Took time to put on socks cause I haven't run sockless in a long time and didn't want blisters
Run
  • 14m 54s
  • 2.1 miles
  • 07m 06s  min/mile
Comments:

Headed out of transition grabbed water on the way past the station and just kept trucking. Had NO CLUE I was going that fast. WOW. Encouraged everyone else I saw out there and thanked all the volunteers multiple times
What would you do differently?:

NADA, I have no idea where that speed came from and I'm super stoked to see it.
Post race
Warm down:

Michael saw me at the finish and gave me a medal left over from the kids race cause he knew how the swim start had me freaked out. I saw preliminary results grabbed a banana and put my gear in the car then we waited for awards.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I need to get my shizzle together on open water swimming when it's cold out. I'm capable of swimming 375 meters straight without flipping over on my back or hanging on a kayak.

Event comments:

This was the first time for this race. Very well organized. There were a total of 9 races through the day each age group had its own race/ awards ceremony. Thus the 5 PM start for the adults. Every thing was on time and well communicated. I would definitely do more races if Endorphin Fitness got into race planning as well as coaching. THe venue was perfect for first timers and those with open water issues.

Speedy girl, no wonder your screen name is QueenZipp!  Wow!  Way to persevere through the swim, too.  Surely it will only get easier and less freak-out inducing with time.  Congrats on the finish and the podium!

kenj - 2013-05-06 10:32 AM Wow!! Awesome race Judi!!  Where did that run speed come from?! That is excellent!

If I only knew I would bottle it.  Wondered if I was short but I went to the clearly marked sign that said run turn around.  Never ran that fast off of a treadmill before and even on the treadmill only for a mile.

Well done - now come and swim with me on alternate Friday night's at POW's open waters in the James. It's been about 66 both times...and I'm getting used to it. I don't like it. It freaks me out. But the 2nd time was better than the first and I assume the 3rd time will be even better. (I'm also going to swim at Laurie's at Rockett's on the non-POW swims. I need as many OWSs in me as possible.)

Nice job!
