Subject: Ender's Game

Are there any other Ender's Game fans here on BT?

It's my favorite sci fi novel.  I first read it in the late 80's when I was a teenager, and have wanted a movie ever since.  I still have my copy from 25 years ago, and have re-read the book so many times that it's falling apart.  The wait will finally be over in November.

It looks like they've kept some of the best details true to the book, such as the scene with the tether in the Battle Room.

I'm such a geek, but I'm also excited that the insignia for Dragon Army looks exactly like I've pictured it when reading the book.

Am I the only Ender geek here?

I've read the book twice.  I'm looking forward to the movie.  I've heard the biggest change is the age of the kids in the movie.  Not a deal breaker for me.  I hope it doesn't disappoint!

Any purist who complains just likes seeing 4-6 year olds beating on each other...

I'm excited for it.  This is one of the best books at teaching people to "think outside the box".  The Marine Corps required all of the lieutenants at The Basic School to read it for that reason.  If the rules are stacked against you, change the game.

Harrison Ford's appearance will be interesting.  I wonder if there'll be a sequence of follow-ons.  It's not like the following books really track with this one.

I don't mind that they made the kids older.  They didn't have a choice, because there was no way they could get an actor as young as Ender was in the book who would have the skill to play the part.

I've also gotten my son into it, because I gave him the book to read a few years ago, and he's excited too.  He's already trying to plan the exact weekend he'll be able to come home from college so we can see it together.

I've loved the whole series for a long time, but I agree that Ender's Game was absolutely the best by a long shot. A lot of things in the book would be extremely difficult to reproduce in a movie, but I'll be happy if they can keep to the basic theme and not make it cheesy.

I've only read the first book, but I am a fan.

I have my doubts about making it into a proper movie though. Maybe I will be surprised but my expectations are moderate.

ender's game is my favorite book and i have read it cover to cover many times.  i saw the trailer and all i could think was "meh".

they have already stated that they completely eliminated the part where ender's brother and sister wreak havoc on the politics of earth while he is away and the movie likely won't show any of his internal dialogue/struggle that really makes the book.... im cautiously optimistic. i mean im going to see it, but who knows.

wonder if the giants drink game will be in the film and how graphic it will get...

From what I understand it is a mesh of Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow. I'm sure it'll be a lot of fun as long as we don't go into it hoping to see a replication of the book exactly.

I was wondering about the giant's drink game too. I hope they included it. I wouldn't think that would be too hard to include. I can see why they'd have to eliminate Peter and Valentine's manipulation of politics through their web alter egos.

I heard this too, which I think is really cool because that sets up a lot of follow-on "Shadow" movies with Bean.  I actually really got into those books after I read Ender's Game, then I read the two "Ender" books that follow Ender's Game after I read all the Shadow books and didn't really care for them.

But if they cut out most of the Peter/Valentine stuff from the movie, that messes with the plot of Ender's Shadow a bit, doesn't it?  So I wonder how they'll deal with that.

I really hope it doesn't suck.  I've been so disappointed by movies made after my favorite books.  For instances, I'm a big Heinlein fan, and Starship Troopers just killed me.  With the exception of Denise Richards, that movie was the worst.  The Da Vinci Code and subsequent movies were all really bad compared to the books as well, at least for me.

after trying to include peter/valentine it would have became a 4 hour movie at least. so it does make sense, but its disappointing too.

I have read the book a few times.  I had heard a movie was coming out but did not know when. Cannot wait to watch the movie.  Maybe I need to read the book again before the movie comes out. Hope the movie is better than the last movie/book combo I read/watched.  I read Life of Pi then watched the movie a few weeks later the movie was terrible.

I hadn't even heard of the book until this thread last week.  I enjoyed the book and will likely read Ender's Shadow next, due to it's storyline being included in the upcoming movie and it seems like a logical second book to read.  Any reason to read a different book next?

I think the Shadow series is the way to go after Ender's Game.  It's more of a logical follow on than the second and third book that actually came out after Ender's Game (Speaker for the Dead was #2 and Xenocide was #3).  Those books take quite a different turn.

OSC had a new book come out last year that was like a pre-quel to Ender, and another one is coming out in a few weeks.
