Signed up last week. My money is in. On a training plan for it that I started in January, and I'm feeling good about my training so far. Race is in mid-September. It is going to be a serious challenge getting to the starting line because of life issues (the month of August especially, for good reasons). Wish me luck.

I just signed up for my first, also!  End of September.  I am vacillating between feeling really excited and really stupid.

I know the feeling.   Mine's in just under 5 weeks.

Congratz! Keep it up and get to the finish!

I did my first one last year and it was so amazing I am hoping to do 3 this year.

Good luck, train hard, don't stress too much.

Good luck.  Just finished my first HIM a few weeks ago. It was a great experience and I'm doing #2 in September.  As I'm sure many people have told you, a solid nutrition plan is key.  Never to early to start mapping that out and testing your plan on your long training days.

Thanks everyone, and good luck to those of you moving toward your first, and congrats to those who just finished one.

I'm definitely paying attention to nutrition.  Haven't been able to really test too much yet, but that's all going to start around now as I'm getting in longer rides now.  My plan to start will be to try a mix of mostly Gu, self-mixed Gatorade, and water, but I might also test out nutrigrain bars.

I'm doing HITS at Hunter Mountain.

It looks like there will be a lot of us first timers in HIM this summer. I signed up to do Boulder 70.3 on August 4. My only real concern is the heat, still not sure how to prepare for running in 90+ degrees.

Good luck! Just signed up for my first to. It's not a Ironman branded race, but a 70.3 triathlon. August 3rd, already getting nervous.

I figure you've all probably been doing some shorter races as part of your training. Thoughts/reflections on those races leading up to your HIMs?

I had a sprint a few weeks ago -- didn't rest at all for it (long ride the day before) but still went full gas and did really well notwithstanding a few on the course issues. I'm pretty much set on jumping into an Olympic next week, in which I'm going to focus more on pacing and treat it more like just a training. I've also been playing around with my bike set up to get into more a tri position since that sprint (new saddle, added forward seat post, may drop my bars/stem a bit this weekend) and i want to see if i'm comfortable like that while racing. I'm not sure how much value it will be in an Olympic distance race, but i've been testing nutrition a lot so I'd also like to see if I have any issues with my plan will affect me on race day.

I had a great day... awesome experience (thanks for asking)!

The lake conditions were excellent, and I'm guessing the temp was in the high 50s with calm winds.
I did a ten minute warmup, got our instructions, and off we went.
I swam at an easy/steady pace, and didn't make contact with any other swimmer the whole race.
My sighting was off a little on the first of the two laps, a bit better on the second.
I came out of the water about the 48 minute mark.

I moved to the transition area feeling good, got changed, and off I went on the bike.
My second split was only five minutes longer than the first... so good steady effort.

Came out of T2 feeling a bit tired... but just kept moving. The last 5k felt like 10 miles with the temps@80+ F and sunny.
My splits once again were close. Finished the run @ 2:22, which is only 5 minutes longer than my 1st half marathon last September.

Finished the race in 6:42, and got 2nd in my age group (one of two finishers in the 55-60.. haha podium baby! ;')

I think I played it about perfect for my current fitness level. I finished it fairly spent, but did a steady effort throughout the bike and run (plan was to go easy on the swim). The weather cooperated, the race was nicely ran, scenic bike ride/run, great camaraderie, and finished with a great sense of accomplishment... truly awesome day.

I'm racing my first half this weekend as well. Any last minute tips?!

I'm just happy to get to the starting line this weekend as my first week of taper I dealt with strep throat and upper GI distress that couched me for a week.

I will have my first 70.3 on 9/7/13 in Tennessee at the Nashvegas Tri-fest (They have sprint, oly and 1/2).

Very excited, but very nervous. I am not a good swimmer. I am swimming 3 times per week right now, one shorter with a run after, and 2 other swims of 2500 meters. I have made my own training plan and I think its pretty good, with ramp up and rest weeks every 4th. I have looked at a few training plans (free) and none of them seem to fit my life. I can only work out in the morning (week days), but with the sun coming up early, I can start at 5:15am and go for 2 full hours if needed. My long rides, runs and bricks are all scheduled for the weekends, with a long bike/run brick on Saturday, followed by a longer ride on Sunday.

All you BT'ers out there who have done these before, does that sound reasonable?

Lots of talk about nutrition on here, any suggestions on the best sources for nutrition info? I don't eat wheat or dairy, and I drink Cocunut water instead of Gatoraid, so that limits my choices slightly (no nutrigrain bars). Right now I use HoneyStinger gel and their version of shot blocks. I feel like I will need some real food to last all day. Any advice is appreciated!
