A friend sent this to me today. I often find myself battling the "little voice" - so, these words carry some weight for me.

Thought I'd share...

When the little voice inside your head tells you you’re done, that you can’t go on, that is when you know you’re really just getting started. That little voice tries to make it easy to quit. It tells you that you’re tired. Sometimes it’s clever enough to persuade you to never even begin, that there’s always tomorrow…

But here’s a radical thought: You don’t have to listen to that voice. You are much stronger than you think. You can go much further than you’ve ever imagined. If you persist, you will get your second wind — and your third and your fourth.

Are you trying to tell me that other people have that nasty, lazy little demon in their heads too?

I thought that had something to do with too much Mexican food.

I had that voice for a while. I think I killed him, now I find myself going too hard almost all the time. I really have to try hard not to overdo it. Not sure if that's good or bad...

I also think I killed that voice, but it was quickly replaced with another voice.  This one starts chiming in after the workouts and usually says things like "you are way too old to be doing this to your body.  Did you forget you aren't 18 anymore?"

I guess I never really thought about having two voices....

The one in my original post mostly tries to convince me to skip workouts. If I manage to ignore it then the voice, much like wally247 and clemson05's, kicks in. I don't care how many times I tell myself "easy bike" or "easy run", I never seem to be able to execute it unless I have a slower-than-me training buddy along to keep me in check. If the training buddy is faster-than-me, I'll kill myself trying to keep up.

What he said.  Glad to know I'm not alone.  Gotta learn some things about 'easy'.  Funny thing is that during my last marathon season I had nailed it by doing low heart rate training, but now it seems to be 'go baby go'.

I think this is for people who need extra motivation.  some of us will beat ourselves up with intense exercise until we're sick or injured (or both)... repeatedly.

my problem is that i think my body is tougher than it really is.

I don't think of second wind or third wind but as "valleys" that one goes through (times when your energy is low in a long workout or race). This concept is courtesy of a former coach. You get into a valley and you think there's no way out, but then you come out and there's another plateau, then another valley. And if you keep going through the valleys (maybe taking in more drinks or nutrition, fixing your form or breathing, talking yourself out of quitting), you will find you can go a lot further than you think. He was an ex-marine and told us to think about the Marines' prayer--"Yeah, though I walk through the Valley of Death, I fear no evil for I am the ***** in the valley." It usually works for me (probably because it makes me laugh, and forget how much I'm suffering), YMMV!

I kicked that little out when he stopped paying rent. It's not a second wind, it just means your warm up is over.

For some reason my little voice thinks that I am 24 years old rather than 54 years old.  That little voice is going to kill me one day.

I usually question thay voice because he once told me i could beat up that college lineman years ago when i was in college. Boy, was he wrong. I didn't start it. Didn't finish it either.
