Subject: Is this a dumb idea for bike shoes?

So...I'm not a big fan of road shoes or tri shoes.  I have tri shoes, I can manage with them but I just don't like them much.  It's the slick bottoms with the cleat sticking out.

I'm pondering getting a pair of mountain bike shoes (so the spd cleat is recessed into actual shoe tread), and replacing the laces with Yanks (so I don't have to deal with tieing laces).  I know that the point of being clicked-in is to have better transfer of power to the pedals, which is made better with the stiff shoe, and using mtb shoes with Yanks will certainly take out some of that power transfer.   But...I'm not even close to podiums, usually finishing FOBOP, so would it really matter?

two things:

1. you can get MTB shoes with velcro straps, not all of them are ties.

2. the mtb shoes are going to be quite a bit heavier and not nearly as areo dynamic.

3. I am unsure why you believe that they will be any more comfortable than other bike shoes - in my experience (I have been riding mountain bikes for 15 years, and have owned multiple MTB, Road and Tri specific shoes) there is really no difference.

My current shoes are stiff mountain bike shoes with velcro straps and they work well for me, a fellow "FOBOP" for sprint races.

I'm using velcro mtb shoes. Got them when I started mtb'ing and kept using them when I got a road bike. I just got a tri bike so I'm thinking some new shoes are in order but I'll use the mtb shoes and pedals until I save up the cash. (Tri-bike wiped out my spending cash for a little while.)

You don't like the slick bottoms or cleat sticking out while you are walking with the shoes on?  While you are riding?  While you are staring at them in the closet?

Have you gotten a professional fit done on your bike, including the cleats/shoes/pedals?

sounds like the problem is- you want to be able to walk around in your cycling shoes.

I love using MTB shoes for commuting, town riding. I also like the fact that you can leave them on while running through T2. ON that note, i have recently purchased some specialized trivents, and wont be using my MTB shoes on my road bike anymore (Very comfortable, and too good a deal to pass up). It is deffinatetly preference though. Do what feels good for YOU!

I wear MTB shoes for triathlon. I'd rather run through transition in these, than leave my shoes on the bike and run barefoot. (Snicker now if you think that is irony considering my board name.)

It may be your tri shoes as all the pairs I have, I have never had trouble slipping when walking or running in them.

I'd skip the elastic laces and go with velcro strap type shoes that come in tri, road and MTB.

My husband's first pair of bike shoes were low end tri shoes with holes for both bolt systems for either MTB or road pedals. He has balance issues so went with MTB as they are easier to get out of.
