Why are fences so expensive? I thought I'd put in a new back yard privacy fence before I plant, and I am in sticker shock. I tried for something modern, maybe incorporating some corrugated metal. Or horizontal boards. I have a small back yard. 88 linear feet and 2gates. Lowest bid option is $4800 fot a cedar horizontal shadow box style. Is that outrageous or not? serious question. I am not scared of any DIY because of the effort, but of expertise. Mr. Booty is home only 4 days in every 14, and has limited energy for larger projects where he is not already proficient at. We would happily be 'hands' if we could have someone take charge and organize it. I love "yard crashers". Ahmed, I need you to come to Reno!

Totally thought this was about how Rapiers, Sabers, and Foils cost too much...

However, I thank you dearly for posting that info because I'm gonna have to put one in in the fall. Good to have that quote. Thanks BG!

I'm not being flippant when I say material, labor, equipment, insurance, permits, taxes, other overhead, etc...It's expensive, because it costs the contractors that much, plus they should have some profit too. Most people would be shocked to know what most businesses' expenses are and how little is actually profit for most of them.

I think I am surprised it costs almost as much as new furnace & installation from a few months ago.

I have dogs, and needed to repair my fence sort of quick... then them and the next door neighbors dogs became best friends, even though they bark at each other all day through the fence.

But you it seems are not in a time crunch. Fencing is easy, the lay out is the tricky part. Getting your posts set right. After that, it's a breeze. There is plenty of stuff out there to read. Even if it took Mr. Booty and you a few weeks, you can still get it done. Mr. could help you set posts in a weekend or two, and you could put up the rest. Obviously that might impact how "fancy" your fence could be, but this is regular DIY stuff.

But ya, like was said, contractors have a lot of overhead, and they have to make a living. But they would have it done in a couple of days too. You pay for time and knowledge.

I put one in around our pool. I REALLY wish I had written a check instead. OMG, what a pain to do. Especially here in Connecticut where we are the glacier's dumping ground. Rocks are everywhere and, with fencing, you can not just move over a bit to avoid them. The posts must be 6' on center.

I found materials from a place on-line based out of Ohio. They were good to deal with and, for larger orders, shipping was free.

But that and roofing are 2 jobs I'll never do myself again.

I looked at my quote again. It says galvanized nails, and the do not paint or stain.
1. "The Internet says the nails" will eventually oxidize, and deck screws are better for both that and dealing with eventual warping. But is time con$uming. My neighbor's fence is 3 years old and is stained.
2. If they don't paint or stain, I would think it is best to do that before the fence is made anyway (going with a "shadow box" type, so it would be had to get into the center of the fence.

I wonder if I have the contractor set the poses and we do the rest would be a good split.

Me too.  Fences are fine and all, but fencing is cool.

Had a driver at my last house ran into the front wooden fence and took out 2 posts in a 12 metre length of front fence (the driver then fled the scene so we didn't have anyone to send a bill too).  Similar story that the insurance company sent around a contractor who came back with $1500 or so to do the job, which for them was to only replace the 1 post (second one with a crack through it completely did not warrant replacement according to them).  We got a lot of pressure to sign them up for the job as it was only going to cost us the $500 excess on the insurance.

Had a 3 day weekend coming up so got the materials myself and redid the entire front fence for around $800.  Sent the contractor and insurance company a photo of the job and told them that I did not appreciate their quote and they were not needed and to stop the strong arm tactics in trying to get us to sign.

Unless it involves electrical work or plumbing or similar, it's generally much cheaper to do it yourself.  Take the time to budget in any tools required for the job though.

And yes, you want screws.

I had some other quotes for some real artsy fences with metal and such, and for a wall. I decided it would be inordinate amount for a custom fence or wall and then went with a cheaper route of a wood shadowbox fence. I am going to call a handyman I know to see if he is interested or has a friend.

Can you do the iron fences? We are only allowed to use iron, straight bar with 6" spacing. No wood privacy. Because they're modular, it's supposed to be a little cheaper.

Assuming that their nothing unusual about your project, the price for the shadow box fence sounds high. I would have assumed that the cost would be more like $3000-$3500. I work for a contractor and we recently did a very similar fence and knowing the cost of the materials, I don't see how the cost would get that high. That said, I'm not sure if their are any permits needed for fencing in your area.

As for having a handyman do the project, be careful with whether they are licensed or not. At least in California, any project over $500 has to be done by a licensed contractor. I am not sure about the laws in Nevada, or even if fences are included in that, but it is worth looking into. The other issue with using a handyman, who are usually unlicensed, is that you have no recourse if something goes wrong. While that is rare, the Contractors License Board is a powerful ally in recouping lost money.

As for nails vs screws, galvanized nails will work fine for this application. They are coated so as to not oxidize (or at least drastically slow the rate) and for a fence you shouldn't need the pull out strength of screws. While screws are marginally better, it will make the project considerably more expensive.

If you are planning on using cedar or redwood dog-eared fencing, there really isn't much need to stain or paint unless you are looking for a particular look. The boards are fine to be installed raw and will darken nicely over time.

Did you do that to keep the green grass from growing into your dirt/mud???  That is annoying when that happens isn't it?

UCLAMatt - My handy man is licensed - sort of retired and takes on some jobs. This is probably too big for just him, but maybe he knows someone.

Iron fencing would be nice in my front yard, but the main reason I want a back fence is for privacy - small yards in my neighborhood. I don't particularly care for the weathered cedar look, and the nails do rust into streaks in about 3 years here, despite the lack of rain.

I adjusted my design and brought it down to about $2600 so we are going forward. Anyone have strong opinions in the seal it now or later, given that we prefer the reddish color to the weathered gray? And of what kind of sealant?
