Pre-race routine:

I got to the Y around 6:15, picked up my packet, put on my stickers and bib, then set up my transition area. I had a couple pieces of toast with Nutella on them for breakfast.
Event warmup:

Ran a mile to warm up, then put on the wetsuit and swam out to the yellow buoy and back.
  • 14m 38s
  • 750 meters
  • 01m 57s / 100 meters

Awesome swim for me! I've learned that the beginning is always going to be a little rough. I struggle with all the other swimmers, and just catching my breath. But I reminded myself that the beginning of every pool workout is tiring, but I can do 750m in my sleep. So, after the first 100 meters, or so, I really settled in and felt great. My breathing was good, sighting was good, and I found myself passing other swimmers, which is pretty rare for me.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, the start was rougher than I want, but manageable, and the rest of the swim was pretty exemplary for me.
Transition 1
  • 01m 21s

I struggled just a little with getting my wetsuit off, but not much. Overall, I'm happy with this time.
What would you do differently?:

Remember to put lube on my ankles and wrists for the suit.
  • 33m
  • 11 miles
  • 20.00 mile/hr

Really happy with my performance, as this is my first 20mph average. I pushed and was able to stay with some relatively fast guys for just about the whole bike. I really tried to hammer it up the first hill, and I think it made a difference. I cornered really well, also. I'm not sure I could've done it much faster.
What would you do differently?:

In retrospect, I always feel like I could've gone harder, but I did just about everything as well as I could.
Transition 2
  • 00m 51s

A good transition for me, in and out. Oh, and I managed to hit my Garmin buttons in every stage this race, which is great!
What would you do differently?:

Not much
  • 22m 23s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 12s  min/mile

This run capped off a great race for me. I started off running next to a guy in my AG who had been riding with me the whole bike course, we passed each other 4 or 5 times. I used the downhill at the beginning to pass him and never saw him again. After that, I tried to just keep the pedal down, accept that it was going to hurt, and keep running hard.
What would you do differently?:

I would have dropped dead if I'd gone harder; I'm sure of it.
Post race
Warm down:

I was pretty beat at the end, so I spent a little time just cooling off and getting my head back on straight. Then I had some coke and a water, and headed over to the Performance Therapy tent for a quick ART massage, that stuff really works.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I'm sure a proper taper would help. I came into the race with 24 miles of running, 58 miles of biking, and 8,500 yards of swimming; however, I'd say this race pretty much captured what I'm able to do in a race right now. I PRed every part of it, so I can't complain.

Event comments:

I love the course, and Set Up does a great job putting on the race.
