I was going out for the third loop of a ride and I was in-between parking spaces going up a lane and this car was coming towards me, kinda hard to explain, but a two-way lane between parking spaces in a parking lot. Nothing out of the ordinary there. All of a sudden she decides at the last minute she wants to park on a spot the next lane over, so the starts to uturn through the parking spaces to her left, my right, and she starts to turn right in front of me, and I hit her head on as I caught her as she was starting the turn. She says she didn't see me at all, I saw her but I wasn't expecting her to turn right in front of me. She's only 17 and started crying when the cop showed up, I think she was more freaked out than I was So I'm sitting on the floor trying to figure out what happened and notice her car is starting a turn so I ask her, you were turning? And she said yeah I wanted to park over there, and I say, yeah, maybe not such a good idea, and she says I know now, I will never do that again! Very polite kid, had all her papers, gave them to me when asked, didn't move her car so the police could see exactly what happened, took a picture and emailed it to me. Probably just started driving on her own and didn't even know that particular parking lot is cyclist central. Went to the hospital to get checked out, and I only have bruised tendons and ligaments in one leg and it hurts to bend the leg and flex the foot, they say to play it by ear, when it doesn't hurt, go for it. Taking two days off before resuming training, I can walk without too much pain (and the doctor said some pain is ok, but don't fight through excruciating pain). I had a 16 miler today but since next week was a recovery one I'm just doing this weekend next weekend Kind of wait and see how Tuesday's workouts go. Could have been worse!! Bike's handlebar on one side is twisted in and needs new bar tape and a brake cable snapped, about $200 in repairs. I have a police report and her insurance info so as long as her insurance pays for the bike repair and the hospital copays I'm good. |

Extreme Veteran 643 , Guam | Subject: RE: Got hit by a car yesterday! WOW, glad it wasn't worse. Hope you are ok in a day or two, without any residual injuries. I was running on the sidewalk in broad daylight, cross street had a stop sign, this woman driving her car runs the stop sign and hits me just as I take my second step or so across the intersection. Bumper chipped me up onto her car hood (dented that), slid up and hit her windshield (smeared sweat all over that), she hits the brakes and now I am flying off the hood out into the main road. I look up just in time to see another car, brakes locked, sliding right at me. I roll out just in time to not get hit again and the second car just squishes my water bottle. I was sore for weeks from that one. From then on I assume no car driver ever sees me. Edited by spearit 2013-05-12 1:24 PM |

Why during our race, IDK!! just microseconds from getting hit. |

Regular 1893 Las Vegas, NV | Subject: RE: Got hit by a car yesterday! Well, good news, I didn't get that dreaded second day soreness, when you wake up the next day and it's so much worse. It's actually better!! About a day and a half later and I can run with some minimal pain, barely any pain when I walk, most pain when I bend the leg in a sitting position. I can fully flex the foot now but with pain. Nevermind the training, I'm happy that it looks like the body will fully heal. I've always found I recover quickly in a general sense, i.e. from workouts, so it seems my body has a good repair mechanism Off to the bike shop tomorrow Monday. Get them to check the carbon really well. Calling the insurance company and letting them know I will be submitting the repair and hospital bills once I have them. Waiting a couple of weeks until there's no residual pain to make sure nothing lingers. I got a good feeling that I won't have problems getting the costs covered by the insurance company (GMAC). What's funny is that a parking lot is private property and there was nothing to cite, just a general report to write. Thought it was really funny that the cop called stop signs inside parking lots "suggestions." There apparently aren't ANY rules in parking lots, just suggestions. |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: Got hit by a car yesterday! Glad you are okay and your second day soreness isn't there. Be aware your medical insurance will likely not pay any of your hospital claim since it was an accident caused by someone else. If by chance they do pay your ER visit less your copay, they will likely come back for you for what they paid. When working with the insurance company consider all the costs of ER visit and doctors fees that go along with that often the ER doc, and radiologist bill seperately. |

Regular 1893 Las Vegas, NV | Subject: RE: Got hit by a car yesterday! Pain keeps getting less every day. Back to working out tomorrow Tuesday. Swim in the morning, trainer at night, then Wed morning strength and Wed night trying out the running. Bike needs new handlebar and tape, ~$110 after taxes, they say it actually looks pretty good. I didn't know that about hospital bills, once I get the bike back (handlebar will take about a week to get here, thankfully I have my old bike) I'll drop by the hospital and get a bill. The bike shop will give me an itemized bill. Talked to her insurance company this morning to get the ball rolling, have a claim # already and her adjustor will be calling me. |

I was/have been in the same amount of pain as if I had ran the 16 miler on Sunday lol There's a time and place for pain and suffering, but this aint it. Fix my bike and pay my hospital bills and think before acting while driving in the future and I'm good. |

Fix my bike and pay my hospital bills and think before acting while driving in the future and I'm good. Excellent attitude! I know the comment above was a joke but a lot of people think this way (like your friends!) And from a practical standpoint, it's not like insurance companies will just give you money for pain and suffering if you ask for it. At some point the insurance company will ask you if they can close the claim- ie, you've finished making claims for this accident. Be really careful about that. With a carbon bike I'd want to make sure some damage didn't come to light much later, and wait until you're sure you're fully healed before you agree to that. You're donig an ironman soon, right? I'd even wait until after you're recovered from the ironman. (I learned this the hard way- I was hit by a pickup truck as I was crossing the street, just walking not training, and my thought was "I thought I was going to die, turns out I'm fine except for these huge bruises, yeah, pay the emergency room bill and close the claim." 8 years later I still have scar tissue on my upper leg, and wonder if something could have bene done about it.) |
