Doing imlp and really trying to get more comfortable on the bike have had newer fit, trying new saddle but plan to wear a bike short on the bike segment.

Got a great endorsement for the desoto 400 mile bike short......but before I pull the trigger on the purchase ...are they as good as advertised? Is the. Butt pad thicker it at least more comfortable than most?

Any thoughts? Do you wear them?

Thanks

Never done a full but I've done a couple 70.3's and several 40-70 miles rides in mine and never been disappointed. I would say the pad felt a tad big the last 5k of NOLA 69.1 a couple years ago but it was hot and the wheels were falling off the bus for me. If you are changing shorts for the run, this won't be an issue at all.

While I have not personally tried the 400mile bibs I have a lot of other DeSoto gear and that is all as good as advertised or even better.

I tri-club member has a 400mile bib and he LOVES them. He recently told me that these where the best cycling shorts he ever had.

I wore the De Soto Riviera tri shorts for my IM and was more comfortable than I've ever been in my other bike bibs etc, I stayed in them for the run and had no issues.

Here is my .02

I used the Forzia tri suit when i did the IM last year, and had no problems, no saddle discomfort at all.

I used the 400 mile short on the BP MS-150 this year, and had major saddle discomfort.  However, I do not blame the shorts for my saddle discomfort.  I blame the lack of saddle time.  Last year while training for the IM i also did the BP MS-150, but i did not wear bike shorts.  I wore just plane spandex underwear.  nothing else!  and I was fine until late the second day.  where as this year i had the 400 mile shorts and I started to feel discomfort midway through the first day.  IMO it was the lack of saddle time in my training this year that caused me the problems not the shorts.

As for the shorts, they are nice and the pad is thick.  I would not say it is thicker than any of the other shorts I have seen/felt/used.  It is just a soft foam pad, so it is not a gel pad or anything.  But i do like the compression legs, those are nice.

If money is not an issue i say go for it.  they are at least as good as any of the other shorts out there.

If money is an issue you might want to look around and see if you can find a decent pair of shorts at a LBS for slightly less.

Good luck,

Thanks for info....yes, I plan to change out after the bike to my tri kit shorts.

From.what I read its not only a thicker pad but the way the chamois is.

I realize there is more to.bike comfort than shorts but I find riding anymore than 40-56 miles my ischial tuberosities/ aka butt bones ache......so just hoping that the shorts compliment a better bike fit, saddle, and more time in saddle.

Thanks

for IMMT I swam and rode in my 400 mile shorts and then switched to run shorts for the run.  Almost all of my bike training is done in the 400 miles.  I have two bibs and one shorts that I rotate through.

I have the 400 mile shorts and I like them, but I would prefer the bib over the short especially if you are changing.  The bibs just seem to fit better and hold the pad in the right spot better.

Good luck.

Scott I was also thinking about getting a pair myself to try out as your right it seems like most people who've used them have given them a good endorsement. If you do get a pair let me know what you think.

First year they came out I and many other BTers wore them many for the whole s/b/r of IM. Some men ended up with 'monkey butt' during the run portion of IM with the 400 mile shorts. Women didn't seem to have the same issue.

I wore them for 2 of my IM and they worked well no issues at all.

Pad is thicker than thin tri shorts but not as big as shorts. Pad is made out of something that dries quickly. Men and women chamois shape in the 400 shorts is quite different as my husband has a pair.

Swim/bike in them and switch in T2 is excellent idea. To see how it works for you do a swim/bike brick. Often overlooked but a good training workout.

Not one bit.  It was under my wetsuit and the pad doesn't really absorb water so no issues at all.  I did try it out ahead of time to be sure.

I'm going to be the odd man out here, but I have some 400 mile shorts and I don't like them at all. The pad is nice, but I'm not a fan at all of the material they're made of or the fact that the stitching is so big. They tend to chaff faster than others. I'm more comfortable in tri shorts. I train in them and race in them.

For IM I change shorts after the bike, but I still wear tri shorts for all three SBR

I've done a couple of HIM's in 400 mile bibs and never even noticed the chamois on the run.

I use the 400m bibs and love them.  Definately more padding than the forza tri shorts (which are my main tri short).

The pad doesn't hold any water.  Did IMFL with the bibs under my wetsuit and never noticed it. Changed into running shorts for the run.

Would absolutely wear them again for an IM swim/bike.  That said, I would never run in them.

great...this is why I love BT, great advice from others.

I am going to get a pair.......I am happy about the swim part of this, because I thought I was going to have to wear another tri short in the wetsuit, change to bike short, and then back to my tri short that will be matching my tri top....this willserve me well but as always will try it out beforehand first

I was just posting in a mentor thread about this.....

I have the 400 mile shorts. While they are great and I have nothing but great things to say about them, I don't think that they are significantly more comfortable on the bike than the Forza Riviera tri shorts. And, you can run in the Forza Rivieras which you probably shouldn't in the 400 mile shorts. In addition, the Forza Rivieras are significantly cheaper.

I have never bought a second pair of 400 mile shorts.

I have accumulated six pairs of Forza Rivieras over the years.

DeSoto has a no questions asked, 30 day, money back guarantee on all their products (if you buy direct from them?) Both styles are available as a bib or short. Try them both out and see what you think.

I've done the swim/bike combo in the ladies version 2x and had no issues. I actually think the padding is quite thin but others think it's big/thick.

Not just the Forzas, the Forza Rivieras. They are different shorts. The Forzas just have a little piece of fleece in them and aren't that great (IMO) but the Rivieras have the DeSoto float pad which is made out of the same material as the 400 mile pad.

I purchased a pair last week because everyone on the BT forums raves about them.

Received them on Tuesday of last week and had them back in the mail to return on Wednesday.  I hated the fit of the shorts and despised the fabric.

Maybe the horrid fit is just a product of my anatomy.

They definitely are tight. When I got my first pair, my wife took one look at them and said, "those make you look fat and that is hard to do." They weren't very flattering but I fell in love with the pad and have never looked back.

They do stretch out a little bit with time and I got used to the fit. I also lost 10 pounds over the last two years and that probably made a bit of difference.

I cant find these on the desoto site.  I can find Forzas or Riverias but not Forza Riverias...
