Subject: Official BT Links for Kansas City Triathlon

I know most on here seem to have opted for the 5150 this year, however I'm interested to see who else is doing Kansas City.

BT moved the race link for Kansas City Triathlon to Lawrence, along with all of the race history.  They were confused (like many) about what was going on in the KC tri scene.  They tell me they will get it fixed after the race, but in the meantime, if you're looking for the links for the Kansas City Triathlon here they are:

Kansas City Triathlon - Olympic Course
http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/directory/link-detail.asp?linkid=52562

Kansas City Triathlon - Sprint Course
http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/directory/link-detail.asp?linkid=52563

Since these links have been "hidden" (they didn't exist until about a week ago) it looks like I'm the only one doing the race. Who else is officially in?

In for the oly. After crashing on the bike and limping to the finish last year, I am ready for some payback.

According to their FB page, they are expecting about 1000 athletes for the Olympic distance.  That's pretty impressive (to me) considering one would expect KS 5150 to draw pretty well too.

I am in for olympic distance. I would not pay much attention to their marketing on FB, KC5150 last year attracted than many. Much like other things they are full of lies.

Calling it "Midwest Championships", really???? very deceptive, actually flat out lie, USAT designated Omaha triathlon as Regional Championships.......

I would like to eat my own words but no chance you are going to see 1000 athletes. That does not mean that the race will not be run well. I think they know how to put on a good race. Just too much milking the cow with pay for this, pay for that extra, VIP.....age graded race???? what bull is that.

I race around this country and this is silly.

Well, good luck everyone.  I'll be at the 5150.  Stupid and ridiculous they cannibalized each other to the detriment of the racers.  Jon, keep the shiny side up this time!  Wink

Four hours only for packet pickup on Saturday. That stinks, or am I reading this wrong? Ugh!

Noticed that as well. Poor planning. I would rather take an hour out of my work day on Friday than deal with the wrath of my wife for interrupting our Saturday.

They just announced on the FB page that they're reversing the prior announcement regarding no swim warm-up.  Swim warm-up will be allowed from 7:00 to 7:30.  Smart move with water temps in the low 60's.

Since this is my first tri, how should I approach the swim warm-up given the fact that my age group will be one of the last to go off at about 8:45.

Seems 5150 is on the other side if the scale. Combine the two and it would be just right.

I'm sure there are many far experienced than I...but I would think for you the greatest benefit would be feeling the water, getting a feel for the open water, etc.

Unless you have been traing in cold water, do not be surprised when you jump in and you experience shallow and panicky breaths. It takes a couple of minutes to adjust your breathing and relax. It would be better to get some of that out before the race craziness.

Since there will be an hour plus out of the water waiting, you'll want to do something to warm up on the beach while waiting...light stretching, jumping jacks, simulate your catch/pull, light jog, etc.

I'll be there on Sunday morning. This will be my first time with the KC Tri but have done the course multiple times with the Jackson Tri. Lets hope the water is higher this weekend and we won't be walking on bottom 300M out again. Lol.

Looks like the local weather stations are calling for rain later in the day too, which will be great.

Did my first OWS today. I wore my full wetsuit, and got a little warm. The lake(large pond) behind my house is a lot smaller, about 200 meters across, but it certainly wasn't as cold as I expected. The Facebook page said water temps at the marina were at 70 this morning. That is crazy how fast they have warmed up.

I do like our swim waves compared to the 5150. They seem to be cramming all of the age groups together in three waves for men and two for women, whereas ours is spread out over an hour and a half period. I suppose part of that has to do with our course being two loops and the need to spread people out.

See you all tomorrow at pick up, or at the race on sunday. Sleep well.

No so fast my friend. The swim waves had been posted for weeks until yesterday or today and suddenly they disappeared. There was a message about them being posted at packet pick up. Sounds like it's going to be an adventure. I fully expect packet pickup to be a complete zoo. I'm going to try to slip in a few minutes early (around noon) because I'm going to have 4 cranky kids in the car waiting. I sure hope this doesn't drag out.

Wait wait wait... two loop swim? I recall all the complaining and moaning with the Jackson County tri being two loops and midwest meltdown being two loops and then BAM, "Kansas City's only triathlon for athletes by athletes" is a two loop swim? Is anyone complaining about this or are they just happy enough the swim will happen with the water temps?

And, by no means am I pointing anyone out. In general there seem to be a lot of two loop triathlon swim complaining in the past.

Not a big deal anymore?

Just as a follow up, I saw on FB today that they have a second swim warmup time in the intermission between Olympic and Sprint races (about 8 AM).

The bike is two loops, not the swim.

I went to packet pick up at about 12:15 and got in and out. No complaints from me. The two t-shirts are nice and I think the VIP was actually a good deal. I'm bib # 265. I'll be racking my black Cervelo with Sufferfest decals. If you see me, be sure to stop and say hi.
