That is pretty good especially when you factor in you get more of that back on your dividend

For some reason DCRainmaker is suggesting you not buy it at the REI fire price.  Not sure why but he said he had an announcement on Friday (and it is not a new version of the watch).  Perhaps a competing watch?!?!

This is what Ray posted.

(Unrelated gadget deal side note of the week: As many of you noticed, REI will be starting a short sale on Friday on the FR910XT ($340 with the HR Strap, $300 without), and the original Ambit also cheaper.  For those waiting on that – just hang tight.  Given you’ve gotta hang tight anyway, then I’ll have something of note at 12:01AM Eastern on Friday.  Oh, and no, this doesn’t mean there’s a new FR910XT coming out.)

Wonder what's coming.  Must be some new gadget.  He's told us it's not a new Garmin 910, so it must be another manufacturer is going to hit the streets with a lower priced product.  Maybe the new iWatch gets announced that's waterproof and has GPS in it?  Or maybe a waterproof, updated MotoACTV for $300? Or perhaps the Pebble folks put their $10M kickstart dollars to good use?  Guesses?

Dang. When DCRainmaker speaks, I listen, but it's hard to imagine something better than the 910xt and that price is AWESOME.  $340 w/ the HRM strap.  What could be better than that? Could some place be counter-dealing for even less?

You could always buy the watch and then return it if something better comes along.

Wow...that really has me curious.

Seems contrary to Ray's normal approach.  He normally doesn't jump to conclusions about new products and waits to fully test them before making recommendations to his blog readers.

If I had to take a wild guess...Ray wouldn't make such a statment if there was simply a competing watch coming to the market.  It sounds more like a complete game changer or a big name company entering the market.  iWatch would not surprise me.

Ray said that it was on sale starting Friday and I still see it full price at REI.com.

The $340 price (actually $339.99) was in a REI catalog that I got in the mail today.

It doesn't actually go on sale until *this* Friday, the 17th.  I think the site will change at that point.

Thats a crazy good price especially with the dividend at the end of the year. Like posted above I would jump on it and return it if needed haha too bad I got one months ago

He's nto saying there will be a new watch.  Could just be that he's been made aware of a better deal that will go live on Friday.

But it is interesting that he's being so cryptic.

That's a crazy deal. I got mine brand new without HR band for $345 on an eBay auction in January and I was thrilled.

It must be something really cool coming out (or another site offering it at a lower price?) if Ray said not to jump on it...

REI is essentially a coop.  The members are technically part owners of the coop.

Each member gets a dividend at the end of the year that is reflective of how much they spent that year that they can then apply to new purchases.

I think we just got 40 or 50 bucks recently of course we bought 70 bucks worth of stuff... so still spent 20 something.

I'm going to assume that the Garmin at this price is not "eligible" for the dividend.  In my experience, most sale items aren't.

Is the swim stroke feature on the 910 better now?  I wasn't an early adopter because of all the negative reviews about it calculating distances in the pool.  Something about the accelerometer being finicky with ones stroke or wall push off.  I have the 310 and could not justify making the switch.

I have absolutely no problems with it in the pool.  None.  Unless I get out of the pool and forget to turn it off. It is flawless--me, not so much:)

ETA: I got mine fall 2012, FWIW.

Exactly, only regular price items (not ending in .x9 or .x3) are eligible for the dividend

I thought everything was eligible for the dividend as its based on just the amount you have spent over the year. The things that seem to not be eligible are when using your 20% off coupons etc that they send out as well. I could be completely wrong on this though
