Total Time = 5h 25m 54s
Overall Rank = 733/1500
Age Group = 35-40
Age Group Rank = 108/220
Pre-race routine:

Traveled down the Thursday before the race. Had as swim with the pro's Friday morning. Water was so rough and choppy it was not possible to do any normal swimming. 100m and 3 mouthfuls of water. Not sure I could have done the race if conditions stayed like that. Slept like a baby and woke up from the alarm clock with no nerves at all.
Event warmup:

Got to Transition at around 6am after a 5am wake up. Had toast for breakfast and a coffee and a little water.
Went for a little swim to warm up but the water was freezing. Not sure if i warmed up at all!!
Swim
  • 40m 30s
  • 1900 meters
  • 02m 08s / 100 meters
Comments:

The swim was very much as i expected as I had trained for. To wake up and see a perfectly flat ocean was a blessing. The way out you have the jetty to sight with but got lost a few times on the way back.I was aiming for under 40min so it was close.
What would you do differently?:

Do more speed work in the pool
Transition 1
  • 03m 50s
Comments:

Put my socks and shoes on in Transition. Also had issues getting my number belt on.
What would you do differently?:

Not a lot.
Bike
  • 2h 41m 44s
  • 90.1 kms
  • 33.43 km/hr
Comments:

From 10 minutes in on the ride my legs felt heavy and sore. Not sure why but was a struggle on the bike. It felt like a head wind both directions and could never get a comfortable speed happening. Was hoping to go around 2:30 but gave it all on the bike so i am satisfied.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure what more i could do.
Transition 2
  • 02m 50s
Comments:

Happy with Transition. Would have been faster but used tape to tie number belt on as it broke in T1
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 1h 56m 59s
  • 21.1 kms
  • 05m 32s  min/km
Comments:

Went out a little fast. 1st lap was 35 min and then the next one 39min and then 41mins. Was going to try negative split but ended up up forgetting about the speed and just running. Walked a few aid stations and other spots. My goal was for under 2hrs and I did that so very happy. Only about 5 mins slower then my training pace.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. I performed according to my training.
Post race
Warm down:

None

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training times. Need to do more speed work along with the long workouts. I would not like to spend more time training as it was already effecting my family.

Event comments:

I have promised my family I will not be doing another long course again soon so this will be my last. I love the training not the time it takes to do it. I love the events but again the time is hard.
Other then that I would do it again.

Congratulations Matthew! Well done in all the disciplines, but the strong run indicated that you did everything right. Nice finish to all the training effort you put in. All the best to you and the family!
