Subject: Advice on bent wheel

I don't know where to go from here.  I have a Giant bike with Mavic wheels that is on loan to me.  I aired it up to 115 psi this morning.  Tires say it can hold 120 psi.  I usually stop at 105 psi, but put an extra pump of air in it.

I went on my ride this morning and heard what I thought was the sound of the tire rubbing on the brakes.  I got off and checked after riding down the road to discover that the rear wheal was warped, and rubbing against the inside of the frame.

Totally bent wheel.  My question is, is it something that can be fixed, or do I need to have it replaced.  I know absolutely nothing of wheel maintenance.  I was amazed I made it the 2 miles back to the house on it this morning.  Is there anything I can do at home?  Should I take to a bike shop for opinion?

it can most likely be fixed by adjusting spoke tension. If you have a spoke wrench (sometimes included in multi-tools) then you can look up "how to true a bicycle wheel" and give it a whirl. You probably can't make it much worse seeing that it is already rubbing the frame. If you can't get it in, take it to a bike shop and they will probably be able to do it. It may have a broken spoke, or stripped spoke nipple or something if it just went out that bad all of a sudden...

Unless you have a wheel truing stand and know what you're doing, I'd take it to a bike shop and get it fixed correctly.  Especially since it's a loaner bike.  It's one thing to learn by working on your own bike, but not on someone else's.  Riding it home two miles might not have done it any good either.

Thanks for the feedback, it sounds like I may be able to take to shop and have them fix it, and that would be a bonus compared to replacing the wheel ($).
