Holy cow. Anyone see the carnage on yesterday's stage?

Quick recap: Longest stage of the TOC, up one mountain, down the other side into Palm Desert, then a 7K, 20% climb to the finish. The kicker?  Depending on who you ask, the temperature was someplace between 109 and 120

So here's what happened: Race as normal until about 10k to go...then they get out of the town of palm desert and start climbing toward the tram stop. Instantly the peloton blows apart into a billion pieces, it literally looked like they hit a physical wall. A Colombian and TJVG are the only two riders with anything at all, so they set tempo up the hill and drop everyone, with the Colombian having more in the tank, taking the win.

Not so notable, you say?  Here's what else I saw:

  - Guys in the peleton with 5k to go DNF'ed, not due to a crash. Unheard of.
  - Most riders got to the finish line and stopped pedaling, and fell over (or were caught).
  - Two guys passed out 500m from the finish. Just fell over.
  - Guys back in the pack were weaving up the hill. It was too hot and steep.
  - Most guys that started the climb together, over the course of 7k, lost anyplace between 2 and 20 minutes.
  - The riders that had no hot weather training (Boulder, some Belgians/Dutch) really struggled.

Carnage, bordering on dangerous and unsafe. Be interesting to see what kind of 'hangover' a tough stage like that gives the bulk of the favorites...doesn't seem like 18 hours would be enough to recover from that kind of ride.

Anyone else watchin? Broadcast 5PM EST on NBC Sports Network, or you can stream it live with an app from the apple store....

I was really impressed that 10 of the riders in the top 15 were not on WorldTour teams.

Whoa...I didn't see that.

I'm wondering if the non-WT teams are taking this seriously, as it's a chance to showcase themselves on home-turf, whereas the WT teams are either training for the TDF/Vuelta or just fulfilling sponsor obligations(e.g., mailing it in)?

When you got studs Jensie and Thor and Grabsch finishing 15-20 minutes down, it wasn't full gas. Just sayin'.

I think it's because you've got the Giro at the same time, you've got the heat mentioned in your first post that Euros probably would prefer not to even mess with, and you had that explosion yesterday that did funny things to the standings.

The pictures on twitter from some of the riders and the broom car were just painful.  I've seen a lot of people go down for heat exhaustion/heat stroke (mostly in the military).  There were definitely some across that 104 degree body temp line in those pictures.  When you willingly lay on a black top in that heat because you can't not lay on it, you are in shock...

Sagan's a beast! Him and Cavendish remind me of when Thor Hushovd was battling Robbie McEwen.

GomesBolt - 2013-05-15 1:02 AM Sagan's a beast!

I would like to see an overhead shot of that finish, because it looked impossible from the angle I saw.

Seriously, we rewound it three times. looks like he's blocked and then doesn't take a hole and goes to the outside.  If he's anywhere close to position he cant be beat.  I love to watch a good uphill finish but Sagan's converting me to a sprint fan.  Can't wait to see how big his next explosion is.

That was great. I was on the trainer watching the last hour and a half. Talk about motivation.

Exciting finish too. Good to see Garmin-Cervelo and Farrar take the last stage. Especially as I was sitting on an R3

several sharp turns near the finish. going to be hard to keep the trains together. If a break doesn't make it it'll be another Sagan Farrar showdown.  get your high speed camera ready!

Jensie!  Jensie! Jensie!

Easily, easily my favorite pro athlete, evah. If you're on twitter, follow @thejensie - entertaining to say the least. And love the way he goes about, well, being Jens. To sorta paraphrase: "Yeah, we wanted to make a break, and I was stronger than everyone there, but not really a sprinter, so I turned a corner with 5K to go and said "this is the only way to beat the sprinters, I'm all in". Boom.

And I can't even imagine how 6 of the top 10 missed the split today, THEN, upon realizing they missed the split (and saw them 10 seconds ahead, they all did), didn't TT it up to the crew. Crosswinds be damned. At some point you've gotta burn a match.

So Happy for Jens!

What a brilliant move!

Loved his huge grin in the post race interview as well.

Loved his huge grin in the post race interview as well.

That interview was great.  He looked like a twelve year that just hit the game winning shot.  As I realize that I'm grinning ear to ear watching it, I look over and my wife is doing the same.  I really hope he has the gift of commentary (and it sure seems like he would) and pursues it on a channel I get.

I was disappointed there wasn't more coverage of the women's TT. I have a friend racing it, and I would love to see more women's coverage, but good grief Amber's crash was horrific. I'm sort of surprised they showed it. Hope she recovers quickly.

Anybody else fascinated by the bike changes at the base of the tt climb?

10th place for Robin. Seems awesome to me, will she be satisfied?
edit
Scratch that, 10/15 of course she wont be satisfied. BUT 11:xx behind Tejay, not too shabby on that course.
