It takes a big man to just own it like that. Bravo.I shave my legs because I like how they look without hair. That is the truth...there I said it. We can use a lot of arguments for shaving our legs, but most are very minor gains. Thanks, not that I have not used those excuses before |

Triathletes make up about 0.5% of the population. Ask you coworkers what they think. Ask you wife or GF how she feels. Ask you friends at your local bar what they think about shaved legs.I don't shave because its a time investment I don't care to make. I only shave my face when it starts to itch. My wife must be old school as she said she wants her man to look and feel like a man. Why would you care what your co workers think or the people at the bar? Do it if you want, don't if you don't |

Point being, the world is bigger than triatlons and not everyone understands why a man would shave his legs.

RussTKD - 2013-05-16 8:43 AM crmorton - 2013-05-15 5:39 PM Just was reading the thread out of curiosity and thought I would mention my wife's experience about the Kin tape. She is hardcore into Jiu Jitsu, P90X, and running/triathlon on the side, but also has bad knees from previous injuries. She recently started waking up in the middle of the night with extreme pain in her knee, and the pain went away when she moved her knee (got up to walk around etc.). This happened about 3 nights in a row, she was virtually in tears one of the nights. I woke up each time, decided to do some research online. So she is in a bunch of pain, and I am beside her figuring out what the heck she has. My best guess was patella femoral pain syndrome. Guess what, she changed nothing about her training regimen, added kin tape to key spots around her knee (we came up with this idea on our own), wore the stuff 24-7, and hasn't woke up in pain since. We are sold on it.
If my wife knew jiu jitsu, I'd be scared. I'd be thinking I'm doing a good job and BAM! Triangle choke out of nowhere. You know, judicious use of the choke hold every now and then can be very effective, you just have to make sure she can recognize the tap out. |

I've got 20+ years of martial arts experience, and the only things I ever use are my falling skills to not get injured when I crash something, and various body triangles to hold my kid in place so I can tickle her. |

I used to throw pottery and clay would get stuck and clump on my leg hair. It was much easier to wash off (and less painful) once I started shaving. I also noticed two additional benefits which is why I continued to shave long after. 1) Its cooler. I notice a difference in my over all body temp. Legs alone wont do it so thats why I also shave my chest in the summer. 2) I also Mt Bike, and the area I ride in is tick infested (w/ lyme positve results too) Ticks need body hair to cling to, sweaty shaved legs is too slippery for ticks to jump on and get a hold. |

Unlike fleas ticks can neither jump or fly. Mostly they get on you by falling from branches. So unless you bike naked and sport a shaved head, you are not really reducing the chances of getting a tick. |

So unless you bike naked and sport a shaved head, you are not really reducing the chances of getting a tick. I ride through a field with high grass too and some of the trails I ride are nothing more than deer trails. I've seen ticks on my legs when I dont shave them, I dont see ticks when I do. Whether 'A' begets 'B' or its merely a coincidence is debatable, but *my* experience (ie more than once) is enough for me to shave down given that lyme is in my area and shaving seems to reduce my risk of tick bites. FWIW both my dogs are lyme positive (both vaccinated too) and one of my dogs died from lyme complications last year, she was only five. |

My opinion is irrelevant. What I am saying is there are a lot of people who won't look at a man with shaved legs and think 'oh, a triathlete'. Most of the rednecks I grew up with and served with in the Army with and go hunting and fishing with will think it very 'odd'. If you don't care what people think, it's not an issue. |

Regular 272 Apple Valley, Minnesota | Subject: RE: Shaving legs... more aero or man card violation?? I love this topic; I have shaved my legs for sectional swim meets, where fractions of seconds mean advancing or not. I however don’t now, the main reason is that I just want to finish, and I have targeted times I would like to hit. I am not going to podium today but if I get to that point I will revisit shaving. I have the occasional rock ding me in the shin, but other than that no crashes, or rash, as with the cusp of a podium finish if I am having to dig rocks, sticks, bug ,and small birds out of my bushy man limbs then I might consider it. |

I don't buy the idea that shaved legs lessens the problems of rashes, stones, etc. Hair actually offers a lay of protection! That is the primary function of hair. A few years ago I got T-boned by a Cadillac on my bike. I did not have any issues cleaning ther rashes or getting stones out becuase of the hair. Actually think the hair might have helped a little.
