Subject: RALEIGH HALF GEAR QUESTION/FREAKOUT...
Just had a mini freakout. Anyone with experience racing in IM-sponsored events, please feel free to chime in. My biometric data and my bike computer are both run through my iphone, through wahoo fitness. I just read in my athlete guide that the use of communication devices is strictly prohibited. I'm obviously not planning on having earphones or anything that would mark it as a phone, and not using it as a phone during the race... but am I gonna get deeked for having that on my bike during the ride and my arm during the run?

I absolutely can't race, particularly an event this long, without having time and HR feedback. But I REALLY don't want to have to go buy something if I don't have to. No one gave me any trouble about it during the Belews race, which is USAT sanctioned... Thoughts?

They have a facebook page, you could send them a message there, or directly at the email address in the athlete package you were emailed.

I would ask the RD and explain what you are planning to do.

If you have the phone in a back pocket on the bike, I don't think they would ever know. I would also think if you are not running with headphones they would be cool about it.

Assuming you are going to finish in MOP and are not going to win your AG or are a pro, I do not think they are going to be hyper strict about the rules.

In the case that they are strict and you can't use it, I'd say don't sweat it too much. One of my best races ever was when my garmin died on me at the start, and I had to race without any data. Racing by feel can be a very good thing!

Crazy question... did you email WTC/Ironman about this? There is an email address on the ironmanraleigh.com site, send them an email. Our Athlete Services team does an awesome job of responding, just give them a day or two to respond, they travel to a lot of races! If you did email them, please let me know and I will track the email down and figure out whats going on.

Hi Carol hope to see you in Raleigh, Totally agree my garmin went flying early in a long race and it changed me. My best races now at that distance and IM are effort based, and have found myself faster ever since...I just wear a timer now and rarely look at it.

I just had a couple of problems, I could count the number of triathlons I had contested at zero. Secondly, I could count on one hand the number of times I had been swimming in the last 17 years.
