I wore my Garmin 910XT to a race this morning and for the OWS, it recorded this route (see attached pic).

Agh. Obviously, I didn't jump out of the water and take a shortcut over the island!

So I'm assuming it lost the GPS signal and then just joined up the last two datapoints it captured (thus missing off about a quarter of the course).

This is not the first time I have seen this, it's very frustrating. Is there any way to prevent this? Or do I maybe have a bad watch?

Thanks.

It is more accurate if you keep your watch in your cap. I personally like it on my wrist, so I only use that data for HR and time.

RF does not work under water. 1/2 of the time, your 910 is under water. The 910 has to make many 'assumptions' to overcome this. Computers making assumptions can sometimes go horribly wrong.

The only way to prevent GPS Signal confusion completely is to keep it in your swim cap. It won't track your strokes, but you get nice clean swim recordings.

Thanks for the advice - I can appreciate that putting your Garmin in your cap would give you a better GPS reception. I'll give it a try.

Now I just need to figure out how to press the start button when the gun goes off!

Set it to autopause when not moving. Start it and put it under your cap.

it works, but then if you stop at any other time during your race, such as when getting a drink, it won't record that time. So, maybe not the best way if you stop a lot.
