Machiavelo - 2006-07-14 11:25 AM What you did is very nice. But, do you have another bike to train with for the next few days until you get your Cannondale back?

Yes - I have my new(used) tri bike to ride - rode it this morning.

BTW thanks everyone for the positive comments. I'm feeling good about it this morning. She is taking it to the bike shop today to get it fit and to learn the ins and outs of shifting my bike - They are going to take it back there on Monday to put it back to my size - so we do have a 'return' plan.

I'm sure everything will be fine - and really the look on that 15 year olds face when I wheeled the bike out was priceless :-)

Yeah, I guess I will be the voice of dissent here. I would have loaned out the bike because it is just "stuff", but I would have also signed a quick note with them stating when the bike was to be returned, etc and what would happen if the bike was returned unrideable.

There is a point where someone may take advantage of you and I hope that never happens. It is nice to write down the agreement so there are fewer misunderstandings. When there is a misunderstanding, having it in writing does help clarify some of the issues. It doesn't always work, but when they do, it makes for less of a headache.

It's good your LBS is the middleman in the whole thing. Makes things 'easier' if there is a problem like the ridability factor after you get it back. It goes to her with the LBS' sign of approval, and the LBS can confirm everything is in working order after it is returned! At first I thought you just let her take it with good hopes that she'll come back and return it. But if the LBS is somehow involved, at least you have witnesses!!!

i think i would have done exactly what you did - and i think you were wonderful in doing so! although people in my life (and on this site) would've urged me to have something signed - as it is a great idea - i would've just handed it over, too. and i figure hey, if i get screwed while doing something nice, then hopefully the next nice thing i do for someone won't get me screwed over too!! i believe you can never do too many nice things for people - and when it comes to supporting something like triathlon, i say there should be no limits. cheers to you and maybe i'll see ya on sunday!!

Yeah, I was just thinking this; the LBS is the trusted middleman on this matter, pushing it from "sucker" status to "nice and smart" status.

Carrie,

That was unbelievably nice of you! Kudos for being so good-hearted and generous. I am in a strong believer in a "Do to others as you would have them do to you," and its nice to see other people out there with the same mindset.

The encouraging, kind words of a LBS woman 10 years are what inspired me to ever consider triathlon, sometimes I think I'd like to try to find her and say thanks. There is no way to know the postive impact that you are having on this young girl's life with your generous act. And as most of us know, once you get started, you're hooked!

I hope that everything turns out okay with the loan! Let us know

Amanda

EXTREMELY generous of you...there should be more people like you to help young athletes get started in triathlons. I am sure she will be very careful with your bike and it will be kind of cool to see your bike in the race (without you).

You can even have the family return it to your LBS and have them look it over prior to getting it back just to make sure everything is in good shape.

Everything will work out so you should rest easy that you did a GREAT thing. Kudos to you!!

Very nice of you to offer, you probably made this girls month since she gets to do her race. Plus you are going to be there so it isn't like she is taking it out of town or anything. I have loaned my bike out on several occasions, but only to people I trust. Good thing that you have done here.

I totally agree very nice thing to do. I would only hope i would have done the same. The problem I would have is my wife saying," your lending your $1500+ bike to a total stranger".
I'm sure everything will work out famously and they'll remeber you forever.

I guess I will stand alone as the dink of this thread and say that I think you are crazy for loaning your bike.  Extremely kind, but crazy.

You are talking about a Cannondale, so I assume its a pretty nice bike.  If it were a friend, that's a no-brainer, "what's mine is yours" (with the exception of my wife) is the general rule I have with my buddies, but a perfect stranger???  YOUR CANNONDALE????

My current bike is an old Univega MTB that's about 8 yrs old but still runs ok.  I've been able to use it to train for my first tri this summer.  I might loan that out to a stranger.. I have been saving for months to get a nice road bike, and hopefully will be able to pick it up next week.  I honestly can't see being able to hand it over to a total stranger for some time..

I wish the young lady a spectacular tri and safe return of your bike to you.

Update!!  Got my bike back in fine condition and a unexpected gift certificate to a bike shop!  So all is well, the young girl did pretty well....She was 18th out of the water (over 2500 women), averaged around 15.5 mph on the bike (hilly course - and new to my bike), but for some reason her run time didn't register.  I put the medal around her neck at the finish line, so I know she finished - and she is ready to do another.   I think we've hooked another one.......

I haven't ever lent a bike but I happen to be the owner of lots of nice tools, a pickup truck, books and lots of stuff people would rather borrow than buy.  I lend my stuff if asked and offer to lend it if not asked.  I help people do stuff that they don't know how to do themselves.  It mostly works out ok.  Fixing stuff that gets broken is just part of the deal.  Whether I get a bottle of tequila on the seat or an empty gas tank on the return, I always smile and figure it helps the world go round.  Somebody got something done that needed to be done.  I don't believe in karma and I keep my insurance paid up.
