I know wrong when I see it, at least to me......but I've been in the business long enough to know that the lines are very blurry when it involves teenagers or young adults and the sex is consensual.  I'm usually OK with the laws, they are what they are....it's the lifetime label of "sex offender" that bothers me when it comes to kids.

I have also, but it is hard for me to buy the story unless the pick up is in a 21+ bar where the expectation is that there is no way a 14 yo got in... especially when I also have experiences of needing to fight off college guys from cruising a high school cheer camp on a college campus or from cruising the immediate area after a h.s. gets out of class. Granted not everyone works or grew up in a neighborhood where the average mother of 2 is 18, but still. If a guy cannot tell the difference between 14 year-old and an 18 year-old in a conversation after 2 minutes, there is an argument to be made in limiting their civil liberties to keep them away from malls, firearms, automobiles or other big machines that can main. I have worked in high schools since the mid-90's and have seen plenty of students try to flirt or outright proposition adult staff. I just cannot wrap my head around the possibility that a 21 year old acting in anything resembling good faith could accidentally fall for a 14 year old. Again, looks aside, my benchmark is two minutes of conversation for knowing better... 5-10 if you are not that bright.... 10-15 if you are extra special and probably on my caseload.

Well, 21 and 14 is illegal almost everywhere...... 20 and 14 is not.  I see your point to a degree...again, my problem isn't with the law, it's with the label.  Teachers and students is a whole other issue....and as for college guys cruising for HS girls....if the girls are 17, 18, 19 years old, it just doesn't matter at all in the eyes of the law.

Ya, happened to me. She said she was 18... we were "sort" of dating... meaning more than just one night stand stuff.... then she had to admit to me she isn't... like it was a big deal... I'm like how old are you... 17... NO, how old are you!... 15. WTF!!! I flipped. She most certainly looked 18, she was very well developed. I was committing a crime and had no idea, and certainly no intention. Didn't talk to her again, waited for the police to come get me....

And that "sex offender" label is used WAY too often for WAY too many things... it should be for the worst of the worst... rapists, child molesters... not somebody that grabbed a butt cheek, or anything in this sort of situation.

It can be, it depends on what laws are on the books.  Many places don't have "public urination", only "indecent exposure".....and THAT can cause you alot of problems, again, depending on where you are and how the laws are written.

For the record, I'm all for registering sex offenders.  My problem has to do with the crimes they are identified with.....some of those crimes don't deserve the label.

I think that depends on the locality.
For example, some places link mere nudity with sex crimes while others define sex crimes based on a certain penal code.

I know that the nearest traditionally nude beach had a recent change in enforcement.
It went from no enforcement, to a misdemeanor court date, then to infraction citations.****
http://www.ocweekly.com/2008-07-31/news/do-san-onofre-nudists-stand...

Skinny-dippers getting cited for a misdemeanor asked for jury trials, even though it was not a sex crime, solely for the purpose of the DA dropping the case because they had real crimes to prosecute.

The infraction made it harder to fight and serves as a bigger deterrent.

Why does it always have to be about the penis?

Ya... and no totally outside the realm of possible. There were not a lot of seniors that turned 18 before graduation. But 14 is 8th grade, and a senior going out with a 8th grader.... uh... I do not remember all the cool kids going to pick up their 8th grade girlfriends. That is a pretty huge gap at that age. Should it be criminal... no... but that is as far as I'm willing to take it. Cause an 18 year old with a 7th grader... that's just not right no matter how you look at it.

But, the thing is there are these laws in every state, and you should generally know when you jr. girl friend is just not cool and when she is criminal. Because when you graduate... hanging out at the jr high is going to be the same delima.

About 2/3rds of my class graduated at 18. IIRC Sept. 1 was the cutoff date - so anyone born during June, July, and August were the only ones who DIDN'T graduate at 18. If you are one of those summer BDay kids, you'll spend you freshman year at 14, and graduate at 17.
My daughter will spend 5-6 months as an 18 year old senior (in 13 years...).

And to really wrap your brain around something: I knew a girl during undergrad. She graduated HS at 15, was a college freshman at 16. She was a bit weird though LOL.

I think the issue with op comment is that both sets of parents were aware of the relationship. But the younger girl's parents waited until the older girl turned 18 to do anything about it. It was legal when she was still 17 but once she turned 18 it became illegal.

If those facts are true then a good court will throw that case out.

I do too.....but like I said, it takes a good court.  I'm always optimistic that people/courts will do the right thing.  I've seen that far more than the other way around over my years of dealings with both groups.

it's not about the age of the older girl. The Florida law says that the younger one can not consent to a sexual relationship until she is 16. so it was illegal when the other girl was 17 as well. From what I've read the parents of the younger girl had been telling the older one to leave their daughter alone and she continued to pursue the relationship. This was their final option.
for this case the whole "she turned 18 and it's now illegal " is a red herring.

Talk about a poorly written law.......a 24 year old cannot have sex with "someone who is 16 or 17" .  What's wrong with "17 and under"?

I think you are right Gaarryy.....it appears that 16 is the age of consent, unless the other party is over 24, then you must be 18 in order to give consent.
