Subject: Wetsuit or no wetsuit?
I jumped into triathlons last year and looking back, I'm amazed just how inexperienced I really was. I started training for my second season over the winter and I have amazed myself with how far I have come. I have a sprint coming up in July and I'm feeling like I'm in the best shape of my life. I raced in it last year so I know the course and how far to push it. That being said, I believe I have an incredibly good shot at making the podium so every second counts. Without a wetsuit, I have got my 800yd time down to 14 minutes and in a race, I generally swim about 10 seconds faster per 100. My question is, the water will be warm enough (68-70) to not need a wetsuit. I think I can shave significant time off of my T1 time if I swim in my tri suit and leave my wetsuit at home. Thoughts? Wear it or not?

Thanks!

That is pretty warm, and the swim isn't too long. I would go without the wetsuit!

You already did the math. By the time you hit T1 your suit is down to your waist. Its not going to take you much to rip it off your legs. It may seem like forever but it never is more than a few seconds here and there. The wetsuit just gave you a free minute. Anytime you're allowed, wear it.

It should be less than 15 sec to get it off... for 750m it should be worth it. Wear the suit unless its above the safety cutoff.

Agreed with the two above.  Practice getting the wetsuit off quickly and you will come out well ahead.

How much faster are you on the swim with a wetsuit? At 800 yards it might be a wash but the other issue worth consideration. Either way, good luck.

I'm guessing I would be about 1:15-1:30 faster with the wetsuit... My swimming had come a long way and I think I'm seeing the point. If it takes 15 seconds to take it off and I'd save 1:15-1:130 with it, I'd be a fool to not wear it.

Thanks!

I'm doing my first tri Saturday. It starts at 7 AM and the forecast is calling for a high of 82 (air temp). Do I need to rush out and get a wetsuit?

The Elite wetsuit was redesigned four times before going to the market in order to maximize its benefits. Does all this speed come at the expense of comfort? I had to find out.

Being lean isn't all wine and roses. The reduction in body fat has, unfortunately, also made me a slower swimmer. I have also become a real wimp in cold of any kind.
