Just curious as to options... ladies with chin to shoulder length hair... what do you do with it? I have really thick straight hair (except for the grey parts... those just do whatever the hell they feel like doing) and I find that a low ponytail to accomodate the bike helmet is super irritating on my neck for the run. What else do you do with yours?

Not a lady.....but I braid my daughter's hair.  She likes it as tight as I can get it.

Save it guys, I've got 4 daughters, you learn to braid or you die. Laughing

Cut it shorter so that you don't need to worry about tying it up. Sure you get helmet hair but just slap a cap on when you start your run and don't take it off till you get home and shower. It works for me, I can't say I look glamorous but let's face it not many of us do when we are training or racing.

Good suggestion this is what my mum used to do when I played a lot of sport as a kid. If you hair isn't long enough for one central braid then do two a bit like pig tails.

Helmet on bike. Hat/visor on run. Usually french braid(s) underneath.

There are a few bike helmets that accomodate varrying heights of ponytails if you're interested in investing in a new helmet. For the bike I don't have many ideas for that length of hair (let it blow free?), but for the run a hat/visor in a ponytail is very versitile and easy.

My hair is usually about chin length, sometimes slightly longer, and straight. I usually put it up in a higher pony tail then pull it through the back of my helmet and then through the back of my hat on the run. I used to put it in a low pony tail so it would fit under my helmet and it drove me crazy.

I have the exact same problem - I usually adjust my ponytail in T2 so that it works with my running cap - it looks hideous by the time I finish though!

I have really long straight hair.  I don't think you need to cut it just to race comfortably!

My helmet allows me to pull the high ponytail through the back.  Most are made this way.  Then it's high enough to be out of my way for the run.

My hair is finer, but if you have thick hair I might suggest some gel before putting your swim cap on to tame it down a little so it's less likely to bother the back of your neck on the run.

Awesome, thanks everyone for all the different ideas! I think i'm going to work the double french braids for Sunday's event and then muck around to see if the high ponytail-helmet trick can work going forward! Temps are expected to be about 39*F for the morning... don't think my fingers will work well enough to feed a ponytail through little vents!!

I have a bob that starts really short in the back and is angled to get longer toward the front. I can't do a ponytail at all. Instead, I take one of my daughters small ponytail holders and pull the longer part in the front up and out of my face and secure it with the elastic on top of my head. And, to make matters worse, my hair isn't really straight or curly...when it air dries it just looks plain ugly. I would toss on a cap during the run, but I have this thing with my ears, lol!

My hair is below my shoulders & layered. I just wad it up in the swim cap; do a low ponytail from what is hanging out of my helmet; throw a  cap on for the run.  I pull rubber band holding the low ponytail out and thread my hair through the hole in the back of the cap (this can be done on the run).

I wish I had a dad to braid my hair!!!

I'll use a barrette to secure the front half of my hair - I'll clip it towards the top/back of my head. Depending on hair length, I'll either leave the rest or I'll do a low ponytail.

I actually just had a hair conundrum on my run this weekend. I've been growing it out - for no other reason than sheer lazyness - and realized that it has gotten long enough that my low pony that works with my bike helmet is now too long on my run as it bounces up and down and itches my neck. Was just thinking I may have to get it trimmed for this reason only.

Oh the things we do for our sport!

Double or single french braid depending on the length of my hair any given season. Its gonna be ugly by the time you're done, but its out of your eyes and not moving around on your neck.

I've got two daughters, I'm a woman and I suck at braiding.  Maybe it's just a gift LB...

I tried the double french braids for the first time at my race last weekend and loved it.  No more messing around trying to get my ponytail low enough for the bike helmet but high enough to be out of my way on the run.  I didn't have to think about my hair at all.  I had my daughter do it for me - couldn't quite manage it myself and my husband refused to do it for me (that's a girl thing!Smile).

I have hair that's between chin length and shoulder length....straight and fine.  I sometimes do the low pony tail thing and haven't had any issues with it bothering me with the helmet or for the run.  But I've also just left it down in the past.

When I don't pull it back, I usually try to get it wet and pulled out of my face before the swim....then I throw my helmet on in T1 and it's out of my way....then throw a hat on in T2 and it's out of my way.  When the race is over, I usually try to keep the hat on as I know my hair is a sweaty mess.  For this length of hair, this option seems to work reasonably well and has never resulted in hair blowing in my face or anything.

Mine is between chin and shoulder and I just pony tail it. I did have an issue with the HIM I did in January. Not sure if it happened during the swim with hair hanging out of cap and being rubbed by wetsuit or on the very windy bike ride, but I had a sizable chunk of hair at the nap of my neck that I had to cut off afterward because it was a big ball of knots. Soooo maybe the ponytail wasn't such a great idea.

When I had chin length and a bit longer hair I preferred two pony tails (with barrettes for layers). Having them off the side seemed to alleviate any trouble with my helmet.

I quickly browsed an article in Men's Health that talked about doing a triathlon, and how it wasn't really that hard. With a "tsk!" I quickly turned the page while thinking, "Yeah, right!"
