Race Day Events
75F / 24C
Sunny
Total Time = 53m 2s
Overall Rank = 5/214
Age Group = M30-34
Age Group Rank = 2/16
Pre-race routine:

Had to come home early from Chattanooga (sadly) so I missed seeing the US Pro National road race, but I figured it'd be fine to get a race in myself as compensation. Got the bike set up and got some sleep, I admit I was a bit concerned after my last race ended in a DNF, but I brought my game face.
Event warmup:

Biked a little, got a good run in and a longer than usual swim. Stubbed my toe coming in on my bike warmup... ended up bruising the crap out of it, but didn't effect my race.
Swim
  • 06m 6s
  • 350 meters
  • 01m 44s / 100 meters
Comments:

16 Seconds slower than last year. Of course I haven't been putting in the same kind of times in the pool, so it was expected to be a bit slower... nonetheless, I wasn't totally thrilled, although I did feel good in the water, which had kind of worried me (probably unnecessarily)
What would you do differently?:

Probably could have went out a bit harder.
Transition 1
  • 01m 11s
Comments:

hey, a little bit faster than last year!
What would you do differently?:

I should probably practice my transitions... at least once or twice a year...
Bike
  • 28m 9s
  • 10 miles
  • 21.08 mile/hr
Comments:

Road my CAAD (with shorties) instead of a tri bike for this race... felt like it was the right choice as I've kinda suffered on the later half of the course in the past years. I think it was the right choice even though my time last year was 27:57 (although I was 7th on the bike OA)

Now that splits are up, I can say I definitely made the right choice on bike to bring... just a couple of seconds difference but much better set up for the run.
What would you do differently?:

Can't think of anything, it seemed like a well paced ride to me.
Transition 2
  • 00m 30s
Comments:

Almost bit it hitting a speed bump when my foot shot off the top of my shoe, but I recovered and held it together. Felt like this was a quick transition, and at :30 it was :09 better than last year.
What would you do differently?:

Careful :)
Run
  • 17m 8s
  • 4 kms
  • 04m 19s  min/km
Comments:

Last year was a 17:49 on the same route, so cutting :40 off made me pretty happy, especially since I felt pretty comfortable all the way til the end (as opposed to hurting from the start) Still a lot of work to do, but I'm ok with it.
What would you do differently?:

Run more. Lots more.
Post race
Warm down:

Cooled down, got something to drink, etc. Talked with Josh (JWade) for a bit and we ended up 5th and 6th and both getting first place in our AG's. (I'm an old man now so we aren't in the same AG any more) All in all a pretty good day.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Time and miles. There's still much more work to be done, but it was a good day at the office.

:24 better than last year... yay.

Event comments:

Racedayevents always has a good race setup. Would recommend them any time.

Nice job and congrats on knocking some time off! Sounds like a cool race. My hubby and I have done a couple races in the Knoxville area this spring (Rev3 Half and the Dirty South Trail Half). It's a bit of a drive for us from Lexington but you guys have a cool racing scene. Hope to get down there some more!

Nice job, it was good to meet you! Transition times are listed on the results now if you want to update.

Best of luck with your IM training (and your quest to stay injury free!)

At mile ten I heard a noise like I had gotten paper in my spokes or something. I looked but saw nothing but a few seconds later my rear tire blows out.

Are these races too close together to give me any sort of recovery? Will I be spent and unhappy racing back to back weekends and then again two weeks after that?

When I told my husband that I planned to work toward completing a sprint triathlon, he smiled and was supportive, but a bit disbelieving.

The challenge? The accomplishment? I want to do this because it is an opportunity to live life. The event is an indoor sprint triathlon. I get to experience the challenge on a safer scale.

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 10 hours toward the end of the 12 weeks.

I was passing others who were saying, "Good job, 587" (that was my race number). People were cheering me on. These were the nicest people I have ever been around!

Since your “A” race is your marathon, which you stated in your question, this should be your main focus. I encourage you to taper a bit for the sprint distance triathlon.

Since I didn't have much time and since it's a super sprint, am I OK just go to at the training relatively hard through Thursday or even Friday?
