I apologize for the brag thread, but I am very excited.

Did my yearly local 5k on memorial day and for the first time broke 20 minutes! (19:56) Last year I ran a 21:48, my previous PR. Got 8th overall and won my age group too (obviously not the most competitive race there is haha). To anyone who wants to really improve your running, the BarryP plan has done wonders for me. Just consistent running for the last 6 months with a bit of threshold work thrown in has helped me drop gobs of time.

Good job on going sub 20, that's a great improvement in a year.

Wow. Great job man. I'm wanting to break the 21:00 mark and feels like I'm plateauing hard. However, I am trying to go for a first marathon distance end of year, so my main focus is on consistent pace and long distance right now.

I seem to be consistently in the mid to upper 20's for the most part (except when life gets in the way). I've had a few weeks in the lower 30's as well.

Nice! It's always a good thing to see hard work (and help from places like this) paying off in a tangible way. Well played.

What was your typical long run, med run, short run that worked best for you?

Well, following the BarryP plan I started out with time, 15 min, 30 min, 45 min. As I progressed with the time, using the 10% rule, I eventually ended up with 2 miles, 4 miles, 6 miles. From there I progressed to 3, 6, 9/10. Once I began more serious training with the bike and the swim it was a bit harder to run 6 days per week. At that point I began to modify the plan a bit, right now I shoot for two runs of 3-4 miles. a run of 6-8 miles, an 8-10 mile run, and a day where I do intervals or threshold work which can be from 5-8 miles.

Dave, that is awesome improvement over a relatively short period of time.

Soon after I got married, I decided I needed to get motivated to work out and focus on getting back into shape. I could barely jog a quarter-mile without needing a walk break.

Executing this full Ironman plan for 17 weeks would give people with one Ironman under their belts very good preparation for a 2nd and 3rd. Preferably, you should have a 6:30 or faster HIM time.

This Intermediate 20 week plan is a quick ramp up in overall volume, but with 20 weeks to train only, it is a gradual and safe approach because of the alternating weeks of the long run/bike.

It sounds like your ankle has seen plenty of mileage and, by the description of your surgeon’s plan, that you have damage to the articular cartilage that caps your talus bone.
