I took advantage of the 25% off sale and picked up a new 910xt. I've been using a 310xt for the past 3 years so I'm familiar with most of the functions but I'm curious about the new swim features.

I normally swim in my home pool using a tether to swim in place. If I go to the YMCA pool to establish my number of strokes per length, will the 910xt calculate my distance if I don't make any turns during a swim?

Congratulations on your purchase. I too was one of the lucky ones that recently grabbed a 910 when it went on sale. To answer your question since the 910 uses an accelerometer for pool swim metrics you will need to push off with a little authority when turning. I believe if you're swimming with a tether it will just show a continuous very long lap. Hope this helps.

From what I know of my 910xt, it's not going to give you distance swimming in a stationary position.

I use a tether system on my home pool too. When I swim at home I don't use my 910 I just use my regular watch to record time then I use my avg pace from lap pool swims to give me an estimate on distance.

If he knows his stroke count for 25, I wonder if he could throw is arm out faster on that stroke to represent a turn.

The watch DOES NOT technically caclulate distance indoors. When you swim indoors you tell it your lane distance. It can tell when you turn and marks the end/start of the length. It adds up all the lengths to calculate total distance. What it technically does it calculate total # of lengths swam and then multiplies by the distance you tell it your swim length is.

I have never swam with a tether but would suggest that it will keep track of # of strokes and that is it.

Additionally, for it to calculate distance I am pretty sure you must be doing a recognized stroke. For example, even though I push off the wall on kick sets it does not register a distance for kick sets.

I think you'd be better off getting a finger lap counter, like this: http://www.swimoutlet.com/product_p/4028.htm

And then just hit the button every X laps that you figure would equal 25 yards.

...or just go by time and guess your pace. Either way, the margin of error will be high.

If you use your normal average pace I really don't think the margin of error would be that high. My avg pace is usually within 2-3 seconds from workout to workout. So when I do workouts with my tether system is my guess at total yardage spot on? No, but I bet it is pretty darn close.

My problem is I can only swim about 30-40 meters without having to rest. What is the best way to improve this? I need to get from 40 to 750 meters in 6 months.
