Elite 3658 Roswell, GA | Subject: RE: Raleigh 70.3 check in I saw on facebook that he was at the finish line drinking a cold one, so it looks like he is fine. I bet he had a flat or a mechanical problem. Sucks because he was throwing down a sick bike leg. |

Elite 3495 SE | Subject: RE: Raleigh 70.3 check in Thanks guys. You really meant alot to me tracking me. I think there were great performances all over (macon, blalock, and raleigh). I have never done macon, but raleigh reminded me of what it would be like if i had done it. it was hot, humid, hilly, windy in places, but they did find a cold spot at last minute to make it wetsuit legal haha. A huge cheer went up in t1 pre-race when they announced that after we were told it was 95% chance of no wetsuit bec it was up to 79 the day before. the volunteers were great. they had ample ice and drink/fuel. The course was fair. It was a very tough run and backloaded rolling/hilly bike course. Swim was a wave start. key issue: Pre-race i lightened my bike in every way possible. one small bottle for fuel and the fuselage for water. no spare kit. it was all or nothing for me as I have come to believe my chances at vegas are growing so what the heck, right? i carry enough lard already still weighing upper 190s. I had my usual midpack swim but 38min and a decent T1 put me in a position to catch and pass my wave and most of the 5mins one in front of me. I kept watts to 282 (was at 302w for my 2:16 relay bike at NOLA last month) for 43 mi and with a decent run i believe that I would've gone to Vegas but it was not meant to be. i crested a hill and as i began my descent my front tire and tube got pierced by glass, a pointy stone or a nail/tack, and i got wonky rolling down the hill. thankfully i didnt wreck. i picked up my bike and ran up the next hill screaming for a tube to no avail,. 50 plus volunteers were nearby at an aid station but not a single had a 700 wheel or even a tube. I considered grabbing another bike in trade fro my shiv but only saw several beach cruisers so thought against it. That would've been awesome! Anyhow, I ended up waiting 35 mins and watched everyone i passed pass me back then many more. As much as I was frustrated waiting for tech support which got delayed by a car/bike wreck somewhere, I only could blame myself. But I didnt have regrets. After the long delay, I thought about packing it in, but knew i had to set a good example FTK and knock out the end of the bike and the run. Those were mojo-less events for me but i got er done and am glad i did. Maybe the sun, moon, and stars line up another time. If they don't, thats fine too. My personal worth doesn't come from a race result. It comes from being as close to well rounded or balanced as I can be considering my life. Thanks again. PS I don't know if i will go without a spare again, but i probably will go without it said the weight weenie. |

Expert 614 Atlanta, GA | Subject: RE: Raleigh 70.3 check in Dang. 300W is throwing down some power for a HIM. Sorry about the flat, would have been nice to see you finish without the delay. Also nice to see the "big" boys that are fast. How tall are you? Don't look high 190's from your profile pic |

Elite 3495 SE | Subject: RE: Raleigh 70.3 check in i havent brought one on most of my races anymore. this is the first flat BD. my thinking is even if i changed it, my race wouldve still been mostly over. it takes me 5-10 mins to change and thats much more than the difference for slots. obv. there are exceptions, but thats why i thought it was worth the risk... do you reckon its worth the extra weight? |

Expert 614 Atlanta, GA | Subject: RE: Raleigh 70.3 check in One tube, 1 Co2 and the little cap thingy can't weigh but a few grams and not going to slow you down packed under the seat but I do agree with you, battling for podiums and such losing 5-10 minutes on a change is way costly so what's another few minutes to get the sag wagon to come along and help you fix it. 6 in one, half a dozen the other Of if you're me, you bend your rear derailleur when you change a flat in a race and then the dang bike won't shift and you're stuck in 2 gears for 25 more miles :D Edited by jamgam 2013-06-03 2:40 PM |

Master 1402 Cumming, Georgia | Subject: RE: Raleigh 70.3 check in Here's my take on the flat kit. I always carry one in a race. You never know if the person in front of you will flat and not have a flat kit then you are right back in position. The chances of that are small but there's still a chance. |

I was just joking about the bad luck. The extra weight of a tube, micro inflator, CO2, and one wrench is not enough to make a difference. A saddle bag causing drag is the real issue. It's not easy to get the stuff out from under the seat though, so that's even more time lost. |

Champion 6962 Atlanta, Ga | Subject: RE: Raleigh 70.3 check in First things first: Congrats on a great race. It might not have been the results you wanted, but it was the best race you had that day. Mad props because the easy road was right in front of you but you finished what you started. In regards to weight, I personally believe that people put too much emphasis on it. Especially when we discuss grams vs lbs. Aero will always always trump weight. This article discusses a disc vs no disc, but the principals are the same. http://www.fiftyonespeedshop.com/post.php?id=62 The only exception to this would be a course with tons of turnarounds as it requires more power to accelerate out of it. |

Elite 3495 SE | Subject: RE: Raleigh 70.3 check in Thanks for the nice words guys. Pretty much the way I read the responses and info. is "always" take the spare bag, and hope you "never" need it. I also think training yourself to change tires and tubes quickly is an underrated activity that should be emphasized more during the taper. The question of if I would have got a slot if I had a tube and tire repair kit is unanswerable, but having the spare and repair kit may have gave me the chance to where not having it gave me a 35 mins deficit to make up. That deficit sapped my mojo on the day which looked to be mine. No use crying over spilt milk. Learn from it! |

Champion 6962 Atlanta, Ga | Subject: RE: Raleigh 70.3 check in I give my guys workouts that include changing their tire during commercials during taper week. They have to keep doing it until they can have it completed before the show starts back up (~3 min). It's one of those fun/weird workouts I give them that is useful but is deemed stupid at the time I give it to them. |

Your fitness level is to the point where if you didn't make 70.3 Championships this race, you know you'll get it at the next. It's called the quiet confidence of being one of the strongest mofo's in the room. Good luck with the ramp to IMAZ. . . |
