Swim
Comments: This was the best time i've had in a swim, that wasn't with a river current. I tried to pick up the pace a bit on the second lap, but felt strong the whole time. What would you do differently?: Swim faster, I think I could've handled a faster pace. Transition 1
Comments: I ddn't bother with a quick mount in this distance race. The time gained vs the potential time lost isn't worth it. Plus the ground was soaked and I wasn't going to run in socks on wet grass. There were wet suit strippers so I always make use of them, not sure why anyone skips them. It's faster and then you don't have to run in your wet suit. I had one of the faster transition times so it sure seems that it's faster to use them. What would you do differently?: Kept my gear in plastic bags to keep it dry(even though they would've been wet within minutes anyway). Bike
Comments: Despite the conditions, this was the strongest bike split I've ever had. I intended to keep my HR around 160, regardless of speed. When I got on the bike my HR was around 180 after the swim and transition. Within a couple minutes I was able to drop it down to the 160's and after 10 minutes or so I was comfortably at 160. I was able to hold this HR for the entire race while still keeping up a solid pace. I drank Perpetuem every 10 minutes, GU every 30 minutes and sipped on water as needed. I finally joined the peeing on the bike club at about the 2 hour mark. I was having such a solid ride I couldn't bring myself to stop and pee and ruin it, so I stood up and let her rip. It wasn't so bad, especially considering I was soaking wet already, it was just a new wet, and a lot warmer. I tried to time it so that I'd be near an aid station so I could spray myself soon after, so I could at least feel somewhat clean. I was very happy with this ride. What would you do differently?: Absolutely nothing Transition 2
Comments: Totally blew the flying dismount here. I misjudged the distance into the TA and started taking my shoes off way too late. I wound up having to just stop and dismount normally. What would you do differently?: Pay more attention to the area approaching the dismount line and figure out in advance when to begin removing my shoes. Run
Comments: This was easily the best run I've ever had in my life. I went into with a goal of 2:15, and a dream goal of 2:10, if everything went right. Everything went beyond right. I started out trying to keep my speed down, and struggled doing that. My first lap was the slowest, but that was due to a long bathroom break just after the start map. I was able to gradually slow my pace down for the first three, but even then, the slowest I could get myself going was a 9:43 during mile 2-3. At that point I just decided to focus on HR and keeping my breathing under control and hydrating properly. My pace remained steady and even sped up ever so slightly. By the time I reached mile 10 I knew I was good to go let the pace pick up. My final 3 miles were my fastest by far. I stopped the walking breaks and wound up averaging about an 8:35 min/mile over the final 3. If I take out the really long pee break to start the run I came in just under 2 hours. What would you do differently?: I can't think of anything I could've done differently. Post race
Warm down: Found a chair, relaxed and took in the new PR What limited your ability to perform faster: My fitness, everything went very well. Last updated: 2013-06-01 12:00 AM

Woke up about 4:45 and got to the race venue very early. It was still raining fairly hard on the way there, but seemed to lighten up a bit when I got to the race site. I had a small breakfast, my typical one, greek yogurt, granola, banana, OJ, and coffee. I had this about 2 hours prior to race start.
Upon arriving at the venue, I had enough time to get my bike and gear to the starting rack, get my chip before the skies opened up and it really started to pour. For the next hour or so I stood, with many other racers under the trees next to the TA to try and stay somewhat dry, though it stopped working after a while.
All the while standing there I started thinking that I didn't even want to race. It was cold, wet, and showed no signs of letting up. I knew it was not going to be an enjoyable day. However, miraculously, the rain finally began to let up about 15 minutes before the start. Enough time to get over to my gear, finish setting up and get ready for the race.
For long distance races I don't do much warm up. I use the swim for that purpose. I just try to stay comfortable and moving around before race start. When the wave before mine starts I try to focus and mentally prepare myself for the race.
