Event comments:

I finished 17/23 in my AG last year and was hoping to be in the top half of my AG this year. Turns out that I was 4th in my AG and only missed the 3rd place medal by 39 seconds. The worst thing is that I remember the guy passing me on the last mile and thinking to myself there is no reason to push any harder since what was the difference between 10th and 9th place!! Not a mistake I will make again. This was a great tune up race and transition practice for my IM coming up!

I looked at the swim buoys and start thinking, "Man! How am I ever going to swim that? That looks like a very long distance from the bridge. I have never done it in one go." There's no turning back.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

This plan is designed to make you go faster. 3 workouts per week in each sport, 2 days of strength training and core work. The maximum volume is around 14 hours toward the end of the 10 weeks.

I signed up for a Sprint in July, an Olympic distance in September, and the Alcatraz tri in October. If I'm going to do it, I'm going to do it all the way.

Keep in mind that the taper period is as important to your body as all of the long hours you’ve put in the pool, on the bike and on the road. It is meant to help you rest, recover and rejuvenate.
