Anyone else signed up for this? I'm doing the Sprint, and my husband is signed up for the Olympic.

Having never been to Winona, what should I expect from the bike course? Is it hilly hilly, or more like rollers hilly?

I'm doing it for the second time this year.
Your race is rollers, your husbands is rollers with one really big hill thrown in the middle, but he gets a great descent. The run is super flat, pretty shaded on the far side of the lake. The first part of the swim has very easy sighting off the big rock in the sky

My husband and I'll be there - my first Olympic distance. We were there on Saturday to test ride the bike course. It's not easy. Lots of hills. The sprint portion is mainly a slow climb to the turn around and then pretty easy on the way back. There are some surprise steeper uphills that you don't see until you round the corner. The climb up Garvin Bluff for the Oly is epic! Get in your easiest gear before you make the turn to Garvin Heights and stay there. It's only a mile of really hard stuff - gut it out - and then on to the rest of the climb and the decent. I admit that the decent is scarier to me than the climb.

Anyone staying over? We're making it a long weekend.

I'm going to be there too! I'm doing the sprint and it is a great course. You can really hammer after the turn around. I remember the lake being kinda weedy, but with the cooler temps, it might not be a problem this year. I love this race. Well organized and really fun.

Forgot to mention the wind at the top of the climb.

I've been told it doesn't matter what the weather is doing, there will always be a headwind at the top of Garvin, which is about 4 miles, until the right turn at the end of the road.

Yes, the descent is nuts. Just looked at last years Strava, on the way down I averaged over 42 mph and hit a max of 51.

FINALLY a race is smart enough not to use the same color swim caps as the buoys. I always seem to get stuck behind a wave full of yellow or orange caps that make sighting even harder for me than it already is. BTW, I work across the street from the lake and the buoys have been out for over a week already. They have been out cutting weeds a few times including this morning when I was running.

I have done the olympic every year and although it would be nearly impossible for me to have less swim or bike training than I currently have, I'm in for the olympic again and can't wait. I'll probably be easy to spot as the guy who brought a cooler of beer for the awards.

Has anyone that is registered for Trinona received any email correspondence about the race? I haven't and just wanted to make sure that I'm not missing anything (and slightly panicked that even though I did register for the sprint, that it didn't go through). Looking forward to Sunday and hoping for good weather and warm water (ha!)!

No emails here -

I did find the start waves on trinona.com. I get to start in last wave. It seems a bit odd that awards start so close to the last waves. I need to finish under 2:15 to make it to awards - I best install the jet pack!

TriRochester will have a group there. I'm not racing this one, but will be hanging out in our club tent. Looks like fairly crappy weather, so be safe out there. And JoeR, I may need to gain access to that cooler...

Where are you staying? We're at the Holiday Inn Express on Homer St. Look for the blonde with the short hair wearing the "Short Course Is Not A Crime" teeshirt.

So, how did everyone's races go?

I loved the sprint bike - beautiful course, and I had the chance to really let my bike fly down the descents. My favorite part of the race, and I managed a 15.6 MPH average, which I was okay with considering I hadn't been on the bike for a week, thanks to our spectacular weather.

The swim, on the other hand, was less than stellar. I didn't mind the water temp at all - compared to the air temp, it was balmy. Weeds didn't bother me either - once I got around the first turn buoy, they seemed to thin out a bit. My problem is that I'm a much more confident pool swimmer than an open-water swimmer. Started out freestyle, then breast stroke and ended up backstroking. It didn't help that I couldn't seem to shake another person in my wave that seemed on the verge of panicking/drowning. I heard that several people were pulled out of the water due to this - I'm just really disappointed in my swim.

The run. Oh, the run. One day, my calves will not cramp up the second I dismount my bike. I ended up doing a jog/walk for the better part of the 5K, and it wasn't until the very end that I was able to really run and felt great. Ended up 6/8 in my division, which I'm not happy about at all. But I finished, and have 4-5 weeks until LT Minneapolis to train.

yeah, I saw a fair number of people getting pulled out of the water as I was waiting for my wave to go off.

Swim - Went well. Wetsuit and water felt great, wasn't too crowded so I was able to get in a rhythm and stay in it without getting kicked/punched/run into. It got pretty weedy on the back stretch of the oly course as well. I am not the greatest Open Water Swimmer, but was able to maintain bilateral breathing pretty much the whole course.

Bike - It was great. The hill was hard, but I loved it. Wish there was something that long and steep here in the cities.

Run - felt great. faster than my 10k at Get in Gear last spring.

Finish time was one second faster than Buffalo last weekend.

My race went really well - I won my age group for the Oly. I was disappointed by the food afterwards - all the hot food was gone by the time I got in. I started in the last wave and most things were done by the time I finished.

But isn't that kinda one of the reasons we all started doing this tri stuff? You know, to look bluff.
