Overcast
Total Time = 2h 34m 29s
Overall Rank = 43/394
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 4/25
Pre-race routine:

woke up at 5am. took a shower and ate some cerial... then loaded the car and left at 545. arrived at race 615 and went to transition.
Event warmup:

transition closed at 7 and my time trial start wasn't expected till after 8 so I just sat around. about 745 took a quick dip in the water just to check out the temperature. I kept telling myself, "It's warmer than Alcatraz" so that I didn't worry about how cold it actually was.
Swim
  • 28m 6s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 43s / 100 yards
Comments:

Don't like the Time trial start. Kept running into slower swimmers that started ahead of me. had to site ALOT cause people were everywhere so you had to weave in and out of the crowds. not my best swim but it will do.
What would you do differently?:

try to start with someone who looks fast and team up to overcome the crowds and so much sighting.
Transition 1
  • 02m 56s
Comments:

Long transition! lots of running to get to the bike. 4th fastest in age group.
What would you do differently?:

get wetsuit off quicker. but it's tougher after such a long run to transition.
Bike
  • 1h 15m 6s
  • 27.96 miles
  • 22.29 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt good on the bike. drank one water bottle of gatorade and had 2 gels total. passed alot of people in the first 10 miles then it got pretty spread out. some fast guys passed me in the last 5 miles.
What would you do differently?:

keep the cadence up on some of the steeper hills instead of trying to muscle up them... maybe that will save some more for the run.
Transition 2
  • 01m 29s
Comments:

getting good at this. another long run from bike to run exit. fastest T2 in my age group by 7 seconds!
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 46m 50s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 32s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt better than rprevious races on this course. The rolly hills get me though. passed a couple people and a few passed me.
What would you do differently?:

gotta get faster on the rolly courses.
Post race
Warm down:

packed my bag, ate and waited for medals. since the number 1 in my age group was number 1 overall, I got 3rd place AG medal. two podiums in two weeks in two states... not too shabby.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

still felt lower back pain toward the end of the bike and during the run. gotta rest that up to get it in better shape again.

TT start to the swim needs to be better so the semi decent swimmers don't continuously run into the semi no so good swimmers.

Event comments:

This is always a TT start for the Age groupers, probably will always be, but I wish it would change.

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

I looked at the swim buoys and start thinking, "Man! How am I ever going to swim that? That looks like a very long distance from the bridge. I have never done it in one go." There's no turning back.

I found a sprint, the Lake Las Vegas Triathlon, that was happening four months down the road and signed myself up; much to the surprise of friends and family.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

The first time I ventured into the deep murky green lake and could not see the bottom my muscles tensed and my imagined fears surfaced. What exactly lies beneath?

A description of my experiences during my first triathlon. It was a great experience. I’m in better shape than I’ve ever been.
