Moses Lake, Washington
United States
BuDu Racing
75F / 24C
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 14m 52s
Overall Rank = 19/102
Age Group = 55-59
Age Group Rank = 1/5
Pre-race routine:

Same as last week in Moses Lake. Got up at 4:30, ate oatmeal, left the house at 5:30. Stopped at Starbucks for a jumbo coffee and hit the road. Arrived at the race about 6:50
Event warmup:

Not enough. Running late so by the time I picked up my race packet and got set in transition my warm up was pretty limited. Ran about one half mile with varying speeds and swam a 150 yards or so.
Swim
  • 27m 37s
  • 1760 yards
  • 01m 34s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started off slow and didn't feel very good in the water. It was a very tight start to the first turn so it was a real mosh pit and I got caught in the middle. Every thing backed up at that initial turn but then finally thinned out after 400 yards. But, I gradually settled down and felt like I had a very solid swim. Slightly slower than last year but the course was a little long (based on my friends GPS) and the waves were a little stronger. And I came out of the water solid.
What would you do differently?:

Immediately go wide out of the start. That first turn is a bitch and if you're caught in the middle like I was there is nothing you can do until the gang in front of you moves out.
Transition 1
  • 00m 49s
Comments:

Pretty good transition. Pulled the wetsuit quickly, grabbed the helmet and I was on my way
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 1h 00m 19s
  • 22 miles
  • 22.00 mile/hr
Comments:

Feel very good about my bike effort. Dropped five minutes from last year...although the head wind we faced last year was worse. So, realistically, I probably dropped 2-3 minutes on the exact same course. Good effort and 16 overall is great for me.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 2
  • 00m 51s
Comments:

Decent transition. No complaints.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 45m 14s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 07m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

Not a good run for me. In fact, pretty mediocre. I was two minutes slower than last year...perhaps because I pushed hard on the bike. But I had a nasty side stitch for the first 2.5 miles. I took more water and walked at the halfway turn-around and started to feel better. But those first miles were quite nasty and I was way too slow.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure. Don't know how to prevent a side stitch and it's not at all normal for me.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around. Talked with the other racers from the the area that I know.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Skill, lack of training, age

Event comments:

I think BuDu does a good job with this race. It's on time and well organized. And they get the results posted very, very quickly.

My first triathlon was at age 56. At first I was just the cameraman at my daughter's first triathlon, then I am doing the races that she has done.

I looked at the swim buoys and start thinking, "Man! How am I ever going to swim that? That looks like a very long distance from the bridge. I have never done it in one go." There's no turning back.

I found a sprint, the Lake Las Vegas Triathlon, that was happening four months down the road and signed myself up; much to the surprise of friends and family.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

The first time I ventured into the deep murky green lake and could not see the bottom my muscles tensed and my imagined fears surfaced. What exactly lies beneath?

A description of my experiences during my first triathlon. It was a great experience. I’m in better shape than I’ve ever been.
