Subject: Fort Wayne gyms for weightlifting?

Hello fellow Hoosiers!

I'll be back in the US for a few weeks this summer.  I will be in the middle of a 12 week weightlifting program.

Does anyone have a favorite gym that:

1.  Has a squat rack (not a Smith Machine, an actual squat rack)

2. Has Olympic freeweights.

3. Allows "short timers" ... I'll only need to go 3 times.

I appreciate any feedback, thanks.

All the Fort Wayne YMCA's have these. They have a $5 charge for visitors from other Y's, don't know if they allow non-member guests.

thank you!  Evidently the Y near my in-law's house just built a big new pool.  They allow 3 visits without paying, then you need to join.   I will have my wife ask while she's there with the kids. (they get to spend a cool 7 weeks in the US this summer, I get only 3.)

Thanks again for the reply!

As a former power lifter I agree, Smith machines SUCK!  However, Planet Fitness has a couple of facilities in Fort Wayne and only cost $10 a month with a small sign up fee (can't remember how much).  But I believe they only have Smith machines to squat out of.  They do have a large amount of dumbells and short barbells that can be used with utility benches for other exercises.

It sounds like it might be a solid alternative to a high dollar membership for one month's worth of workouts.  it might not offer enough free weights as you're looking for, just a good alternative.

What area of town are you looking for?  North? South?

Thanks for the reply Dirk!

I'll only be in FW for a week!   I've already lined up a gym down in Madison when we stay with my parents.

My in-laws live just north of Homestead high-school, next to the country club/golf course up there... Sycamore something?  Maybe?

I'm currently finishing the 3rd week(out of 12)  of Stronglifts 5x5.   A week off won't kill me, but I'd like to keep the momentum going.

Hey, that's my neighborhood, and the pool you're referring to is at the Jorgensen Y. The indoor pool at Jorgensen has terrible water quality and they keep it too warm. Just up the street from the Y is Summit Middle School, and they have an outstanding pool if you're interested. costs $3 a visit.

Thanks vs!  I think the kids were going to do swimming lessons while at the Y, so unless SMS also has swimming lessons, then that's out.   And a warm pool is right up their alley.  My youngest son and daughter have about 1 pound of body fat between them, so a warm pool keeps them happy.   The rest of us could survive an arctic winter fully submerged and only have a little frost nip on our toes.

I'm on the other side of the college-student desk. I'm the one with the red pen in my hand. Those of us with schedules that change from day to day actually have an advantage, I think.
