Total Time = 5h 37m 18s
Overall Rank = 465/1300
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 78/178
Pre-race routine:

Camped out at Clinton Lake again this year in the same spot as last year with Patrick(Jayhox) and Brandon. Camping out is the only way to do this race. Our spot is in the shade and about 100 yards from the finish line. We had some storms roll through overnight, but the tents held up and we stayed dry.
Event warmup:

2 transition race, so that means I will forget to drop some thing off, and of course I did. Set up T2 first, forgot my gels. So I walked back to our camping spot and took those back over. Then there was the half mile walk down to T1 and the swim start. Forgot my goggles, so back up the hill to the campsite to grab them.

On the way back down the hill I saw Reece(reecealan) laid out on the pavement, next to his bike. Not a great start to the day. Luckily, he reassured me he was okay and he was going to stick around to cheer us on.
Swim
  • 36m 1s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 43s / 100 yards
Comments:

Water was choppier than I was expecting. There were alot of breaststrokers out there and since I was in one of the last waves to go off and visibility is non existent I got kicked a handfull of times.
Transition 1
  • 05m 1s
Comments:

No hurry here.
Bike
  • 3h 06m 42s
  • 56 miles
  • 18.05 mile/hr
Comments:

I dropped my chain for the first time ever on a practice ride the day before. I had the bike mechanic make some adjustments, but I dropped it again at mile 11. I had a bad feeling it was going to happen all day. Luckily it only happened that one time. On top of that my front derailleur was not cooperating, so I was stuck in the small ring for a majority of the first 25 miles. Once I was able to get it back into the big ring I left it there hoping it wouldn't cook my legs for the run.
Transition 2
  • 02m 28s
Comments:

Nothing fancy, changed socks and put my shoes on and I was off.
Run
  • 1h 47m 6s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

This is my favorite run course of any event I have ever done. Being able to run through the campgrounds with spectators around you the whole way is very motivating.

Started out a little to fast. I was able to run the whole way with the exception of the aid stations. I even made it up the big hill both times. Last year I had to walk the hill both times. Overall I finished strong and am happy with the run.
What would you do differently?:

Drink a little less.
Post race
Warm down:

Lots of Chocolate milk, a sandwich and a bag of chips. Washed that down with a beer. Jayhox, Reecealan, and Trijayhawkryan, and I watched the rest of the runners going through the course from our campsite.

We were able to meet and talk to Hines Ward post race as well. He was gracious enough to take a picture with us and even talked to us for about 15 minutes. I was certainly impressed he gave us so much time. He seems to be embracing the lifestyle.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Laziness and lack of time in the saddle.

Event comments:

Being able to camp at the race site and the run course make this a cant miss race for me. Plus, it is only about 30 minutes from my house.

Some mistakes I made during the Hawaii Ironman 70.3. Don't be caught out on the course not knowing how or not having the equipment to change a flat tire.

It was the morning of Ironman Newfoundland 70.3, I felt queasy. I didn't want to eat or drink anything. I had a full blown case of the pre-race HEEBEE GEEBEES.

A bad race left me smoldering, but time and a gentle breeze ignited my passion to race again.
