Overall Rank = 23/640

Pre-race routine:

I was a little nervous about the procedures for the event. Woke up extra early, had a Clif builder bar and made are way to the event parking. took the bus over from the east shore to the west shore at sandy point state park. Got my pack and numbers and got myself situated. I took a few sips of gatoraid, but wish i had taken more.
Event warmup:

got the wetsuit on and did a bit of swimming around in the bay to see what the water felt like. Water felt very comfortable, probably too comfrotable as i would find out later.
Swim
  • 1h 47m 46s
  • 7744 yards
  • 01m 23s / 100 yards
Comments:

Overall i was happy with how i did. I was leading the race from miles 2 to about 3.5. I completely died in the last mile and was passed by a lot of people. The current in the last mile picked up and everyone was getting pushed into the bridge pylons. Prior to that i never really felt any current pushing or pulling
What would you do differently?:

I need to take in more nutrition before the race. I just did not have enough calories in me to swim that far.

I also need to do more training if i want to win this race. I never did one practice over 5,000 yards, which would need to increase.

Perhaps tape a GU pack to my arm under my wetsuit.

Soon after I got married, I decided I needed to get motivated to work out and focus on getting back into shape. I could barely jog a quarter-mile without needing a walk break.

I think quite truly for the first time I 'get it'. It's not just about the fitness. It's not just about the great little endorphin rush as you hit 5, 10, 15 miles...its not just the medal at the end.

You’re probably not going to get it just right immediately. Like always, just do the best you can and keep on keeping on. Don’t get upset if you don’t hit the target every time.
