Lawrence, Kansas
United States
World Triathlon Corporation
86F / 30C
Sunny
Total Time = 6h 15m 2s
Overall Rank = 812/1300
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 50/73
Pre-race routine:

Arrived at 4:20, parked, walked bikes in and was too early for T2 setup. Went down the hill and set up T1, back up the 1/2 mile to T2 to set up there, then back down to prep for the swim. I forgot to apply tri-slide for the wetsuit so borrowed some similar goop from a guy in my rack, suited up and headed to the start.
Event warmup:

No warm-up, no one was allowed in the water until go time.
Swim
  • 33m 11s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 34s / 100 yards
Comments:

Sighted well on the way out, went a little wide on the 2nd turn, then lost the feet of they guy I was drafting on and went wide right for a little bit. Had a brief but pleasant chat with a support kayaker about my fitness and vision. Motivated to finish strong by the 2 of 6 women form the next wave who caught and passed me.
What would you do differently?:

More consistent swim workouts
Transition 1
  • 02m 52s
Comments:

I was racked pretty close to bike out, which made for a long barefoot run from the dock. Somewhere along the way I scraped the bottom of one toe pretty good, but didn't notice until today. Stuffing swim gear into the sherpa-bag took some extra time, but I was also trying to stay relaxed and think about the bike exit, and the ride start - uphill and uphill both.

What would you do differently?:

hustle just a little more.
Bike
  • 3h 04m 24s
  • 56 miles
  • 18.25 mile/hr
Comments:

Beautiful course. I developed a new saddle discomfort starting about 10-15 miles in, and spent the rest of the ride doing part-time analysis and trying to get comfortable, nothing really worked and I spent more time out of aero than in, and more time playing with gearing and cadence to try working around it. Nothing really worked, but on the other hand I never felt like any of the hills swallowed me up either. Decent ride overall.
Very cool to see Craig Alexander (and all the pro's) fly by on the bike course, especially compared to my T2 Crowie moment.
What would you do differently?:

Not much really
Transition 2
  • 03m 54s
Comments:

Stayed in the bike shoes going into to T2 due to all the pine needles and crud on the way to my rack. Long time due to waiting for a porta-, but I also got sun-screened during the wait.
As I was headed from the dismount line into T2, Crowie's arrival at the finish was announced, with great fanfare, and while I'm getting, my shoes on to start the run, he crosses the line and immediately starts the winners interview, didn't even sound winded. Some people's children...
What would you do differently?:

nothing really
Run
  • 2h 30m 41s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 11m 29s  min/mile
Comments:

My run fitness is clearly reflected in the result. Inconsistent training, mild paranoia about whatever my issue on the bike was, and a humid sunny mid-80's temp all added up. Mentally things were fine on the 1st loop, I didn't push too hard thinking it would help on the 2nd half - but no luck. I'm not going to dwell, it was by far the most entertaining 13.1 I've ever experienced...already thinking about coming back to do it again.
What would you do differently?:

more consistent run training and carrying less adipose baggage.
Post race
Warm down:

Finished, found shade in the food tent, had my HInes Ward chocolate milks, and generally wandered around.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

New bike malady, substandard run training, and excess BMI to carry.

Event comments:

Post race was a little disappointing compared to Boulder, but overall I like this venue much better all around. I would definitely do this one again, especially if they can repeat the weather.

Some mistakes I made during the Hawaii Ironman 70.3. Don't be caught out on the course not knowing how or not having the equipment to change a flat tire.

It was the morning of Ironman Newfoundland 70.3, I felt queasy. I didn't want to eat or drink anything. I had a full blown case of the pre-race HEEBEE GEEBEES.

A bad race left me smoldering, but time and a gentle breeze ignited my passion to race again.
