Subject: Any good tips for lubing/sunscreening your own back?

I know that sounds like it's a dumb question, but it's something I deal with almost every day and I haven't figured anything out.  My skin gets really dry for the pool and I need to put lotion on it post or I'm super itchy.

Right now, I want to go out for a long ride, but it's hot and sunny and I already have a bit to much sun exposure, and I can't reach all of my back. Waaah :/

Hints? Tricks? Tools?

"It puts the lotion on it's skin, or else it gets the hose again".

Sorry, couldn't resist. :-)

I thought that's what spouses were for?

The spray sunscreen/sunblock works great and you could probably cover all of your back.  For lotion I'd think even the spray stuff would need to be rubbed in but not sure, I do know there is spray lotion now.

This is a common problem for applying self-tanner as well. Take a strip of hand towel, put lotion in the middle of the towel and use that to apply to the middle of your back.

^^ aah you beat me!

Try what this girl does in this self-tanner blog. Basically use a strip of an old towel - put the lotion on the towel and use the same motion you would use to dry your back after a shower.

for the sunscreen- last summer I started wearing a rash guard for noon lap swims to avoid the burned in finger prints I kept getting in the spots I could kind of but not really reach. It added a bit of drag but not too much- also saved me a few minutes on my lunch break.

I'll have to give that a try. I would think that the towel would absorb a lot of the stuff before it got applied to your back.

Not perfect, but the spray sunscreen helps a bit as well to reach the middle.

Haha. Nice. My husband and I have very little overlap, and none during training hours :/

OK, spray sunscreen--check. I definitely need to be able to rub the lotion in, and I'm persnickety about my lotion. It's actually "body butter" because regular lotion doesn't do the job. I'll try the towel strip thing, but I think the towel with eat my butter. Man, talk about first world problems. This is embarrassing.

1. Yoga???

2. What if you put the lotion on one of those cheap stretchy exercise bands instead of a towel?

3. Small 4" short nap or foam paint roller? You could keep it in a baggie between uses, so it doesn't dry out.

You, sir, are brilliant. Short nap paint roller is where it's at. I'm almost positive that will work. I just don't ever want to have to explain to anyone why I keep a lubed up paint roller in my training bag;)

Seriously, that may be a million dollar idea right there. Imagine a short nap roller fabric about the size of a deck if cards at the end of a telescoping handle. The pad could be attached w/ velcro or something so you could change it out or wash it and maybe it could have some sort of cover (like a travel tooth brush) so a lotioned applicator wouldn't be a problem between uses. C'mon, that's retire in the Bahamas good.

Thanks!

Switch, I like your suggestion about the thin removable pad, though. Hmmmm...

I ws going to say use an unlubed condom to store it in, clipped shut with a clothes pin, but thought that was too "creepy". :-P

My wife is constant telling me to patent stuff I come up with. My "problem" is that I think backwards from most people. I envision the solution, then figure out what doesn't exist to solve it, and then make that. This time, #3 alreadty exists, I'm just using it in an "off-label" manner.

Kinda like using unflavored, unwaxed dental floss to cut cakes so you don't damage the cake, or screw up the icing.

Thanks for starting this thread. I don't have a significant other and although I could rub suntan lotion on one of my cats and then rub against them, they probably would be none to happy about that. I was thinking that maybe using a long shower type back scrubber and wrapping a wash cloth around that and using it. I got a really bad sunburn on my shoulders and the exposed part of my back during a HIM in January, merely because I didn't have anyone to put the good stuff on my back. I could have used some spray, but not sure if that would have held up through the bike. Anyway, good ideas

Wow.  Impressive.

How many push-ups can you do? Pull ups?

I'm half-joking.

It's great that there are  people who can move their arms over every inch of their back.  Strength and flexibility are a fine balance :)

Yeah me too, and I've never considered myself very flexible. I do have very long arms though, perhaps that's got something to do with it ;o)

Me too! But it's still darn difficult to put lotion on that one spot on the back. One thing I've tried is to put the lotion on the back of the hand rather than the palm. The towel tip would work too I guess, but the towel will absorb a lot of lotion.

A lot of us don’t spend too much time worrying about stretching and strengthening exercises for our lower back.
