Subject: Heart Rate Monitor
Can anyone recommend a heart rate monitor? I am training for my first triathlon and thought it would be good to have to keep track of calories burned etc. I am trying to lose weight as well so thought this may help encourage me along. I don't want to spend too much as I have been "investing" a lot lately in training.

Thoughts? SUggestions?

I originally started with a Garmin FR70. A nice, solid device, lots of compatibility, but no GPS or anything fancy.

A month ago, I ponied up for a Garmin 910xt. In retrospect, I should have bought one from the start. The sheer amount of data it provides (cadence, speed, heart rate, elevation, temperature . . .) provide a great tool for analysis, even if you only use it for calories, time, and distance.

Generally speaking, the higher-end devices will give you better calorie burn information (DC Rainmaker has a post about calorie calculations), and by the time you think about a decent cycling computer (I had a Garmin Edge 500), the 910xt makes a lot of sense for one-stop shopping.

yeah- x2 on the above.

firstly- yes.  you're right.  you do want an HR monitor.  And, while you're getting an HR monitor, you might as well get something that tracks your mileage, like the aforementioned Garmin FR70.  But, then again, for just a little bit more, you can pick up a whole GPS unit with HR monitor and it will tell you everything you wanna' know.

Whether it be a simple Garmin 210, a more fully featured 410 or touch screen 610 (in successive order of features and price)... or go the full monty and with a 910xt you've got one unit on your wrist that will do all three sports for you- and then some.  The new timex run trainer 2 may also be a good option.

have fun with whatever you decide.

I use a Garmin 910 now but 3 years ago when I started triathlon training, I bought a Timex HR monitor/watch and it took me through all the way up through my HIM race. I think I spent about $100 and it still works great. Of course now I have the aforementioned "cadillac" so I gave the Timex to my son. Pick a decent HR monitor to start with and you'll be glad you did.
