Total Time = 6h 31m 16s
Overall Rank = 1382/2462
Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 195/249
Pre-race routine:

Drove down the day before and did all the registration stuff, excited about the size of the event was really getting a buzz from being there. Stayed overnight up in Easton, slept good up at 4.45, tea, muffin, gatorade, then down to the middle school to get bus to race start.
Event warmup:

none really, a bit of stretching
Swim
  • 44m 46s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 07s / 100 yards
Comments:

Was disappointed with this. I had not trained that much as am a reasonable swimmer. Did a local 2 mile lake swim race a few weeks ago which was also slow, so maybe need to do a bit more work here. The current did cause me problems as kept drifting off course. My scratched goggles also meant I was not able to sight very well. My last excuse is that I breathe to the left as we were going around clockwise, meant that sighting was not helped there either. On top of that lots of jostling and kicking out. However, came out feeling good, and just frustrated that was not able to just get my head down and push more.
What would you do differently?:

more training, new goggles, improve sighting by maybe learning to breathe both sides.
Transition 1
  • 04m 37s
Comments:

This was fine. I had told myself from the outset that I would take time in transitions to make sure I get everything right. Including putting on lots of sun protection each time. So all went to plan.
Bike
  • 2h 45m 46s
  • 56 miles
  • 20.27 mile/hr
Comments:

This was fun. I realized that this is the second furthest I have ever cycled, and the time I did a 70 mile included a 2 hour lunch stop! I was quite apprehensive of going too fast and losing my legs so really held back. I was aiming for a 20mph, and my average split kept gradually dropping by 1 second every 10 miles or so even though I was trying to keep it even. My average speed for the first 30 miles was 20.27mph, identical to last 26 miles! So good pace. As I headed back into Cambridge felt like I should have pushed much much harder, as felt good and really enjoyed the ride.
What would you do differently?:

Go harder
Transition 2
  • 04m 4s
Comments:

very muddy coming in on the bike, no major problems though, more sun screen, cap on, and off I went
Run
  • 2h 52m 3s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 13m 12s  min/mile
Comments:

this was not good. I went off okay and did first mile in 9:20 and felt okay and then just started heating up and the thought of another 12 miles made me stop and walk. The rest of the day was a painful trot and walk. Did a few full miles at a jog and lots of walking in between. Overall I was almost surprised i made it, as around mile 3 or 4 was really not sure I would. Final mile managed to sum up a bit of strength and finished strongly, but overall run really let me down. Had been aiming for 6 hour finish which was long gone by then
What would you do differently?:

I guess it is a question of basic fitness and the need to do more training, more bricks, probably lose 10 pounds.
Post race
Warm down:

sat around for 5 minutes, got bus back to school, returned with car, loaded up and headed back to DC!

Event comments:

the whole shuttle bus could have been a bit clearer, none of the volunteers seemed to be able to direct me to where there went from. Also told I was not allowed bike on the bus, yet loads of people took their bike on the bus which was kind of annoying then having to make the trip back to load it up.

Overall though, was an amazing experience in a fantastic part of the world with great people. Loved everyone having cook outs and hosing us down as we go past. Will be back next year for sure.

Some mistakes I made during the Hawaii Ironman 70.3. Don't be caught out on the course not knowing how or not having the equipment to change a flat tire.

It was the morning of Ironman Newfoundland 70.3, I felt queasy. I didn't want to eat or drink anything. I had a full blown case of the pre-race HEEBEE GEEBEES.

A bad race left me smoldering, but time and a gentle breeze ignited my passion to race again.
