I will be visiting my home town of Ludington, Michigan this August, and saw there was a Tri the same weekend.
Really interested in competing, but not interested in shipping/flying with my bike.
Does anyone have a bike (sz 58-61) I might borrow/rent? (Would be able to pack my own set of clip-on aero bars, pedals, seat.)

If this doesn't work out, I would be interested in a relay, but I don't see that as an option. All options ("Aquabike?") include wheels.

Cheers,
~Karl

Karl, I would think you should be able to rent a bike locally. I haven't really looked in the Ludington area yet for shops, but there has to be something. Otherwise Muskegon is about an hour or so away and you could definitely rent a bike there.

This is a great tri (I've done the sprint 3 years running). Smooth calm swim in Lake Michigan (it is protected by two piers). Fairly flat bike and an even flatter run. Makes for fast times, without any question.

I'm recovering from a torn calf muscle right now, and my goal is to be back for this event. If I don't feel like I will be able to make it back in time, I'd be interested in doing a relay with you (I can swim now, and as far as the usual participants at this event go, I am a FOP swimmer). At that point you could probably ride my Trek Speed Concept 7.0. Honestly, though, my goal is to get through this one on my own, but you never know how rehab will go. Keep in touch about it.

Thanks much!
Was able to track down a bike to borrow - so that's great news. Planning to be there for the Sprint.

Current water temp in Ludington is 55. Ugh. Hopefully the area for the swim (between the piers) is a little warmer.

The email that 3D sent out indicates the water temp in the swim area is 62 or so. We'll see. I actually agree with what you said, I like the water a little colder for the swim so I don't come out too warm, but low 60s to high 50s is lower than I prefer. Oh well, I'm trying to be out of that water in about 7:30, so hopefully it won't be that bad.

FYI - prepare for a *long* morning if you are doing the sprint. The bad thing about this race is that they will start the Olympic around 8AM, and they won't start the sprint until about 45 minutes later if I remember correct. If I recall correctly, they start as follows:
8:00AM - Olympic men
8:05AM - Olympic women
7:45AM - Sprint women under 40
7:50AM - Sprint women 40+
7:55AM - Sprint men under 40
8:00AM - Sprint men 40+

They close transition at 7:40, which meant that I had 75 minutes from the time I left my bike until my race. It eventually drives you nuts. (That was all assuming my memory is correct on those times and orders). This year, I'm joining the 40+ group, so I think I'll be in the last group to head out.

Have a good race, man. I'll be wearing a black Zoot tri-suit with some grey on it, riding a black Trek Speed Concept in case you see me and want to say hey.

Great tips! Thanks!

I do NoT do well in heat. The cool water will be welcome (after the initial plunge).

Ugh! I don't like waiting for ThAT long after warming up...
3D's Email blast listed 400 people for this race - so are the waves going to be ~60 people each?
Just saw a YouTube video from a previous year - is it a wade/water start?

Hoping to join the 7:30pm group run tonight.
And maybe Bike a bit after the open swim tomorrow.

Will likely see you out there! I should be easy to spot. I have Zoot sleeveless,
a yellow Tri top, yellow bike, beard. And I'm 6'5" tall.

At most races the sprint waves start between 8:25 and 8:35 with waves going every 5 minutes, so the last wave should go by 8:55. it will be a bit of a wait if your in the last wave, but it's a great race. I have done it a few times and love it. The sprint course is as fast and flat as it gets.

There will be about 400 combined between Oympic and Sprint. I'd say 250 sprint and 150 Olympic, so yeah, somewhere around 60 per wave most likely.

I'll keep an eye out for you.

Sam - are you doing it? I was looking at last year's results and saw you took 2nd in the Olympic. Good luck if you're back out there!

Oh yeah, it'll be a waist deep (or slightly deeper) water start. The first buoy is probably 200m out, so there is plenty of time for the crowd to thin out a little. It's a nice swim.

Thanks Brad!
It was an excellent day for a race.
Was great to meet you, and to find you just one bike rack away.
So glad your recovery efforts went well and allowed you to race - Great job man!!
Will plan to see you next year (Olympic?)

Cheers,
~Karl

Will think about that Olympic, but I have a chance at winning my sprint AG if I can improve in the run! My focus for the winter will be on getting faster in the 5K, but that will mean logging lots and lots of mile, so I might also be up for the longer distance. Hard to say!

And you got me by less than a minute, so I'm going to have to be chasing you as well! Looks like you got me in both the bike and the run...so some kind of rematch will be on!

Brad- Sorry for the late reply and thanks for the well wishes. No...I did the Charlevoix Triathlon Olympic, and coincidentally got 2nd there.

Sounds like you had a good race as well. Good work.

I have always been an athlete, growing up playing team sports like basketball and soccer. I also ran in a couple of 10K races every year, so I had no reason to worry about running a 5K...right?

After I left the running store, I couldn't stop thinking about the sprint tri and how much of a challenge it would be for me. So instead of joining a gym, I started riding my bike and it felt great.

This life of mine is not so different from yours. It has a multitude of similarities. I suffer from uncertainty, I get nervous at the thought of registering and when getting to the starting line.

I couldn't believe that my splits kept getting lower! I started to run harder after I passed the "5 km" sign and picked a few people that I wanted to pass.
